hey guy I was at the local junk yard near town creek nc and found a 1981 diesel wag limited. It look like a factory install inline 6 turbo diesel but I could not read the Sticker under the hood, But it looked diffrent than mine. It had a diesel emblem on the grill and on the tail gate I did not have a camera but i did get an emblem
http://i135.photobucket.com/albums/q143/bigfoot493/diesel.jpg
The motor was not stuck and i dont know what type motor had a wierd symbol almost like a w inside of a circle
got the vin #1JCCE15N6BT0567879
Also the jeep had diffrent seats almost like xj with limited wrote on them. also had a center console insted of armrest like most wags. It was green with vinyl top with sun roof. On the tail gate it said Bob Bass Inc wonder if it was a dealer install.
Interesting for sure but that VIN says it came from the factory with the 258 I6.

That sounds like something to grab up right away and get running. Would be a neat ride. Must be a custom install. Got any more pics?

Could be Austrailian based.

nope thats all i got. Might try to get pics monday. It looked like it had been wrecked in pass side
The plate under the hood on the firewall said it was made in ohio it also had something that had a 110v plug going into it(box) located where the frresh air hoes comes out of the front sheat metal. The air intake was where the charcole can would be next to the batt.

let me be the first to say:worthless:
If you can tell what kind of motor, that would help. The Nissan turbo diesels that they put in the IH scouts could be had with a 727 auto trans, easy conversion but slow as a dog! (but 20mpg all day long!):fsj:
The VIN says it a US built(Toledo, OH) rig. Would be cool if you could get some pics though and find out what motor it is. I love oil burners and always looking for oil burner options for everything! Heck if I could afford it I'd spring for the Kaw based KLR bike w/dsl motor.

OK after serching my butt of and looking at pics of about 1,000 diesel motors I accidentally discoverd what i was looking the symbol on the motor is VM http://www.vmmotori.it/img/logo.gif (http://www.vmmotori.it/en)http://www.vmmotori.it/img/null.gifhttp://i135.photobucket.com/albums/q143/bigfoot493/vm_black_sm.gif
dont know much more exept that that is the symbol i saw on the valve cover and oil cap

Never seen nothing like that. I know some CJs that were built for export had jap made diesels in them. Man, pics, pics, pics.. I sure would want to snatch that thing up, even if it is wrecked. Would be cool to do a motor swap if it is a good diesel.. That may be worth a road trip for me.

VM Motori is the supplier for the Diesel engine found in XJ's exported to Europe and Austrailia and the New Liberty diesels.
Cool, love to see a pic of it. Was it an inline or V-configuration? VM(Italian) supplied the dsl's for the Euro Grand Cherokees before they went with their own MB diesels. VM also supplies dsl motors for other makes worldwide.
The history of the rig would be interesting too. Built here and probably exported overseas for a gov/diplomat type and had the motor swapped in there. VM's are pretty rare here in the US. Thanks for doing the homework on this.

The Liberty dsl is a VM too?

Inline 6 looks to be aluminum valve cover. There was an old turbo in the back so i think it had been replaced before it was given to the yard, also a starter was lying in the floorbord man that thing was about 3X as big as my starter. Yea I think it might have been shipped overseas and then some time shipped back b/c the foglights are not like the ones here there really wide about 8 to 10 inches and mounted on the bottom of the bummper even with the turn signals has that euro style like a sports car
I wonder what killed the Wag for it to finally get dragged off to the boneyard?
Wonder how hard it is to get VM parts here? Ha...prolly hard but VM is a huge company. VM even supplied the little one cyl dsl motors for the Royal Enfield(India built) diesel motorcycles.

there might have been a machanic lean against/storage it or somthing and the mech could have been awarded ownership or somthing and he hauld it to the yard.the back pass door is messed up and both back side window are busted out and the radiator is out and is in the back. but othere than that and just being nasty it looks to be ok.

This becomes a matter of nomenclature here: What "bugs" me here is that in examining this "insect" is that--whether you may be either an entymologist or an etymologist--you obviously need to put a tag on this animal, but the bottom line is that--in the identification of this crittur--one may need to be both!
It's a game of "what the thing truly is" and also "what perzactly ya call it."

If it has the large yellow type looking fog lights it was probably in France. They are a requirement there.

the next time i will be able to find out anything will be monday. My next day off, I have to go back to get a fan for a mustang. I'll ask about the jeep. I bet they dont even know it has a diesel. It aint worth much to them b/c they can only sell interior parts and body from it b/c the motor.plus the have like 10 fsj anyways.

My guess is that it would be a PO modification. Heck, my two 6.2 diesels & my dad's 6.2 looks like a factory job. I would think it would have been a Nissian diesel out of a Scout. Would have been a perfect swap.

With the swaps you are talking about did you have to mod the motor mount brackets?

Yes, we had to make the mounts that are on the frame. Used the Chevy Diesel mounts. They are well made and nicely welded, so they look factory and not like some hack job. ;)

VM Motori also built the small-ish (about 4 liter) inline 6'es in UPS trucks for many years.
my bet is that it is one of those particular VM's, until / unless proven otherwise... sure would like to know the rest of the stroy on this one!

well I went back out today, could not find the camera(still packed up from the move somewere). Me and my father in-law went to the yard to get a part for a mustang. I let him look at the jeep since he is a ncdot mechanic. He told me it looked to be a shop install(not factory). He did not know anything about the motor he had never hered of VM. He said it looks like it would run. He told me that the box with the plug was a heater that goes to the rad. hose. The motor has a aluminum valve cover. I would say the motor fits the year of the jeep 81 i dont think its much older if it is. The fog lights are a frosted clear. The body is straight, the back side windows are busted out. The rad is in the back. Last dorove in 1997(leagaly), all the tires are holding air. Paint is fadded bad the roof is starting to split. Looks like a good project. The guys that were there last time were gone and the lady at the desk told me i would have to call later to find out about a price b/c, they did not have whole autos listed in there computer. I could id a pic of the motor if anyone could find one i could not find one

ok here is the deal, I could not find my digital camera so i go to the dollar general to get a disposable camera. I get there and they are $5 but under that i see a $10 digital camera, so I buy that thinking it may not show the best detail in the pic but it is reauasable and did take "some" good(decent) pics. I guess i'll have to practice more with it.

It's about 10 miles southeast of Rocky Mount and about 10 miles northeast from wilson apox. 6 miles east of us 301. If you have ever been down us 301 and passed the firestone plant going towards Rocky Mount it will be the first road to the right after the exit for firestone. Turn right at a place called buddies used cars and its about 6 miles down that road on the right

I second this!
This make-shift vacuum pump leads me to believe that this was a conversion and not something a factory would have done.
As Diesel engines do not generate enough vacuum operate a brake booster,
the only solutions would be an electric vacuum pump (like we have here) or a hydro-boost brake booster.

Buy the parts, individually, all at the same time, at a BIG discount. Take them home, all together, (at the same time), bolted together (so you don't lose anything, right?). Now WHO in their right mind at the yard, could question that logic?? :D
Good luck.

Yea, it would be interesting to find out where it came from. My guess though, would be that someone did a diesel swap, and added the emblems to show it off. Or perhaps it's pieced together with the engine and drivetrain from some foreign market FSJ we don't know about here.
