like the topic of the month idea! I'm obsessed with super wagoneers. its a problem :). there are three in my driveway as we speak, and when I get any extra cash, that's where it goes. so, questions nobody knows;
how many were made (ive heard between 700 and 3900 still registered to date). I've never seen one in person til I got my first, haven't seen one I haven't bought since :). who has one here? what do you know? etc. etc. etc....
I've wanted one since I saw ken weatherall's in a magazine. that's gotta be my favorite wag of all times (nice to see where that truck is going lately too!). just can't get enough of em! you?

Yes, I dont know what's up with these rigs. I purchased a 71 J4000 and it came with a lot of extra parts. As I was restoring-- and still am.... found the I have an entire Super Wagoneer interior- black and in mint condition/ like new that is now installed in this truck.
It looks pretty cool;
Low back seats
Seat belts
Door panels
Center console
Tilt wheel
Dash
In Dash AC, not installed as I need heat not AC in CT.
Other odds and ends.
Now I would have never parted this car, nor would the previous owner, but this Super with 15K original miles sat in a junk yard- un-touched for many years. Exterior was totalled, but interior was like new. Since it was not a Jeep yard it just kinda sat there in the back until it was found.
Now it is part of my J4000 restoration which has over $25K invested so in the end the parts will live on. Maybe I wll call it a "Super J" when im done.
Anyway now that I know and have learned more about the Super I have my eye on another barn yard wreck-- would be a major restoration project, but again this one's interior is mint- body has some rust and engine is siezed. All the rims/wheels knock off's are there, emblems and most original parts. Also may need two to make one good one-- or at least that is what I would tell my wife :D
Anyway I see a real Super in my garage one of these days. If you find one that you dont like let me know as I know where I can find some space.... of couse after i finish the new old j2000 that I just got for an early x-mas gift.
By the way used to live in PDX and think it's a great place. Let me know if you find an extra one.
Regards, Blake

Anyway, 1200 is the number Iv seen the most that came off the line during 66 67 68. Mine is the 66th 327v8 wagoneer frame to come down the line for the 66 model year. So even if it wasnt a Super, it would still be one of the oldest 327 Wags built.
Iv only seen one other Super that had an older VIN, but it was in parts in So cal, and was white. Iv seen 3 Empire Blues, 4 Glacier Whites but only 2 Indian Ceramics (mine and one in a yard in WA, desolving into the ground). But Im only counting 327 SWs.
Then there is this one:

blake, very cool. I'm working with a vendor to recreate the extruded aluminum right now, and my #1 idea is to make a j-truck trim. how cool would that be!
I will post pics asap( I'm not usualy home during daylight exept on weekends this time of year).

It's still there, pretty well stripped down. It has a swing away tire carrier on the back which I challenge anyone to go get... there is a spare on it with ~300 bees living in it. I slammed the front door and thought "now why is this hulk making noise..." :D

The guy I bought my winch bumper from used to have one (he never mentioned the year, only that it had a 327), but he had parted it out several years ago. Unfortunetely he didn't have much of the hard to find parts left. Though he did have the hubcaps and a few bits of trim.
He also has a dually and a 2wd panel delivery.

They were a special trim package wagoneer, that happend to have a high compression 4 barrel Kaiser/AMC 327 lurking under the hood. Wag guys want em for the trim, 327 owners want the 4 barrel intake :D (got one) The rest is pretty well covered in posts above.

There's a Super in a junkyard in Jersey that's very rusted out. It's pretty complete though as far as interior and exterior trim goes and yes, the console is still in it. The motor is there but I don't remember how complete. It has to have been there for at least 20 yrs. I got kicked out for taking pictures of it and other fsj's he has. I'll go back soon and see if he want's to sell anything. Maybe he'll be in a Christmassy mood and let me back in...

Yes ditto on the pics for the super waggy and from blakeusa on the interior.
I dont own one but the console from one lives in my truck. If I had the whole interior, id want the "super" emblem to attach to the truck. I would love to have one to restore.

Mine was delivered this morning. I meant to write the vin down before I left for work but I forgot. It is rough - sitting in the boneyard since 85. Most of the trim and badges are present.
I would love to have one as a DD.

Unfortunately, no, they are not there. 2 of 3 badges that appear to be missing as well as the key cover on the tailgate. Hopefully they will turn up in the 2 feet of leaves and garbage inside. That's where I found the clock.

Well if he does let you in and you can get parts, lets us know, we will start bidding on them.
I look mostly for the 'gunsights' on the hood, and the console.

Yes.
The 'gunsights' SEEM to be exclusive to the 327 SWs, as well as the 'knockoff' wheel covers. Rich Truesdales 68 has neither.

While this is admirable, I would convert to disc brakes and a 30 spline rear axle, and leave all else the same. I can (and have) deal with leaky seals, but not with 11x2 front drum brakes :D

kenall, the one I bought from wagoneerworld is a 68, the other two are 67's. not a hood ornament in the bunch :(. my hubcaps on the 68 are original (according to the original owner) with no spinners. like truesdell's, without the black paint. I'm tenaciously looking for those hood bullets for my 68.

Are they all 327s?
I missed two NOS 'gunsights' on the bay 9 months ago:banghead:
I can almost swear that the caps (type 2s) on Truesdells are a ford product, the spinner type (type1s) are 65 Corvette.

Those factory mag hubcaps are sweet. I have seen three different variations on them. One with the spinner system, two no spinner, three had a set of factory horn centers in the middle. At first I thought this was a owner mode but have seen others and one with factory documentaion. My buddy has a set of these hubcaps without the spinner for seven hundred dollars.

corvette hubcaps? I don't understand? my caps are original (according to the original owner whom I belive). they are the same as truesdell's, but his have the centers painted black. cool story on mine I think. it was bought new in eugene oregon, then moved to california. the family moved to maryland in 2000 and had it shipped there. the shipper decided to quit in route and it sat on a trailer for sevral months at a truck stop in texas. a local guy dug it and made some calls and talked them into selling it . he lost intrest shortly later and sold it to jeff at wagoneerworld. then I bought it and will be buried in it :)

Hmmm, if it is yellow with a black vinyl top, it may be my fathers. He bought one new when we lived in Jersey and put over 100K on it--in addition to the 25K he put on a brand-new loaner Marlin which the AMC dealer provided when the Super went down for a month with a tranny issue under warranty. The dealer was a little bit miffed when his "brand new" Marlin came back with 25K. The Super ended up in a Jersey scrapyard when the rust and hard miles took their toll. But, by that time we had a green 72 Waggy replacment.

I will. We visited a second boneyard and found a Gladiator with a 327 in it. I'm going to bring it home next week. He has a Golden Eagle and several GW's. He had more in the back but it was getting dark. I will take pictures tomorrow. I also have an appointment to check out a third yard tomorrow. The owner thinks he might have a Super buried in the back.
I located the SN on the one I have: 1414D S 101245

You are correct, just like the consoles are from AMC Rebels, the type1 wheel covers are from the 65 Corvette, just that the center logo is not crossed flags but the Jeep logo. I got a set of 65 vette caps on the bay, all I have to do is change the logo and im set :D

When I saw a Rebel in a yard some years ago it had my console in it, perfectly matched to the rest of the interior. Next time i was there, the whole car was gone. It COULD be possible that the rebel owner took the console out of a Super!!!
Change it to black:confused:
The plastic disc that has the vettes crossed flags molded into it is held in the 3 pointed spinner by 3 rivits. you could either remove rivits and use the logo from the FSJ steering wheel, (with some trimming) or photo copy same and xfer it to sticky vinyl and stick it to the surface of the spinner w/o removing the plastic disc.

well, I don't have one in front of me yet, but, it looks like a clear plastic disc with the logo etched/painted on the reverse side right? ours are supposed to be black? what about sanding that off of the back, polishing it and painting it black. if its painted on the surface then just paint over it? I don't know without seeing one. I guess some time in the wrecking yard might get you some black discs off of something that could look right.

Ours ARENT supposd to be black, not for the spinner type1 wheel covers.
the center of the horn button on you steering wheel, it has the gold n red Jeep logo, that is the logo that is in the spinner on SWs.
Go to my web site: http://home.earthlink.net/~kenns9/

Digging up an old thread here, but my Grandfather just gave me a Super he has had sitting in his yard for 12 years since it blew the t-case. Like everyone else looking for more info. and ideas for restorartion.
I would like to swap in some J-20 axles and make it a DD/Tow rig for my built ZJ...but we will see, I also like the idea of a super on 37's :D

Stevo- great score! I wouldn't modify the Super Wag too much. They are a rare rig and it would be a shame to hack it up. There are a lot better candidates to use as a tow rig. We need to see some pics as soon as possible too.

Yeah, that's why I am pretty sure I won't really end up wheeling it. I know there are better towrigs too, but it would be hard to justify the super, the ZJ and tow rig to the wife ;) Just to talk her into the wag I had to agree to sell my '98 A4 when it is ready for DD duty.

Color is tan.
Also, it has an AMC 360 from a later wag swapped in as something happened to the 327 (don't remember what). But the 360 has less than 40k on it.

Picked mine up in Nampa (near Boise) about 2 miles from my place. A gal drove it back and forth from Boise to Sacramento often. She got married and move to Sac and parked the Jeep at her dad's place, next to the barn, outside under a tree, where it sat for 3 years. They dragged it out front one day adn happen to see it, so I stopped and asked about it. It was for sale, but they just didn't get around to putting a sign on it yet or placing an ad.
The vinyl top and luggage rack were trashed and the moisture trapped under the vinyl rusted the roof over the years. It also had rust in the usual places in the quarter panels. Also, the in-dash AC guts were removed and the vents and controls were left there. I didn't catch this right away. Also the tilt column was replaced with a standard one and the clock and shift knob were missing and one of the Super emblems on the rear was broken. No original hubcaps anywhere either.
On the plus side, after cleaning out the gum in the carb and draining and refilling the tank, it fired right up and the tranny shifts fine. The 4wd works, brakes work and all the electrical works, even the 4wd indicator lights light up. All the exterior anodized trim is there with no dents or holes, so is all the lower SS trim unique to the super. Original seats and plastic trim is all there. Only rip is in the driver's seat. console is all there. For some reason, mine doesn' t have any evidence of a center armrest.
Original tinted glass is all there. Frame is straight and nearly rustfree.
Gonna be a fun project. I'm going to spread it out over a few or several years. Might be ready for the 50 year invasion. :) I've been told to part it, but I feel there is enough of it left, especially since it's running.
I've read production of the Supers (with the "D" )ranges from 1200 to 2500 units from 1966 to 69.

Yeah, I am surprised, it sat in plain view from the road for about 10 of the 12 years (he just recently moved it to the back yard per orders from my grandmother) and nobody ever came to the door wanting to buy it. Anyway, she now wants it out of her yard all together so it is coming to Colorado.
Oh, and of course, I knew the you suck was coming, LOL! That's half of why I had to brag.

My grandfather did some pretty extensive research at one point, I will have to ask him about it. Anyway, he says about 1200 from 66-69.
The sad thing is it was a fully running, functioning Jeep when parked (other than the afore mentioned t-case). It would have been an easy fix but he just had sooooo many other projects at the time.
He was restoring a couple of MG's at the time. For those interested in Brit. sports cars he has both an MGA and an MGB.
I am hoping none of the pistons are frozen. When I looked it over, even the rubber parts seemed to be in good shape.

Actually IN Boise? Or in one of the surrounding farming communities? I know it doesn't matter now, but I was actively searching for rigs back in '04 when I returned from overseas. That is where I bought my 88GW. The body is in great shape, the engine, tranny, and interior were not.
I would have much preferred one of the older rigs, especially a Super!
My grandpa drives a Camry, God Love 'im. Lord knows I have spent enough time looking at the photos of some of his vehicles. He is 84 and still wipes the dew off his car every morning with a cloth baby diaper. Has done so on every car he ever owned.. If only he had a FSJ..:p

If you drove around south of Nampa, you would have seen my Super. It sat out in front of the seller's place for almost 3 weeks in October 2004 before I finally stopped and asked about it.
There is actually a private-type junkyard near that I drive past going to work. Maybe the guy just hoards vehicles, but anyway, just rubbernecking his place, I've spied 4 late-70's wags, an early 70's wag, a Rhino wag is parked out front, there is a late 60' s wag with no motor, a 70's J-10 with camper, an 80's cherokee, and the guy's daily hauling rig is a J-20.

Yep, in Boise. I am not really familiar with street names out there, but I know the town has grown substantially in the last 10 years. They are on the older side of town but most definately in Boise. He never listed it for sale, hell, he wouldn't even be giving it to me if my grandmother was not so tired of looking at it.

There is a Super in the yard here. Never gave it much of a look other than to notice the Super badges. It is pretty much gone through. I think it might have some random brackets and what not.

If I give you a wish list, can you check it out?
Fortunately, almost all the stuff I need is also on the standard and "X" models. I need one "Super" emblem.

Pretty much all of the trim is there as well. We have a local yard with a ton of FSJ's, so I will be checking it out in the future for super wag trim parts as well as J20 axles.

did all super wags come with the amc 327? the 68 that james1414x gave me has no motor but the exhaust Y wraps around the front of the engine compartment for the drivers side manifold. my bud has an old wag with the buick 350 and his does the same, so we are wondering if the 68 had a buick instead of the 327.

thanks james, thats what i figured but wanted to make sure. i guess i'll have to consider the source when talking with my bud, after all his wag is sitting at the bottom of a ravine...

My '69 has the Buick 350 and it dumps to the rear on both sides.
My J2000 with the 327 dumps the driver side exhaust to the front.
In early' 68, all the wags went to the 350. A titled '68 may be a leftover '67.

i haven't had a chance to even touch it yet. i was going to drag it back to my shop last weekend but where it sits at my buds property it would have been too tricky to get the trailer in there and not end up with 2 wags in the ravine! hopefully it will dry up soon so i can get it home to dig into it.

I did some wandering out toward Nampa and out in the Kuna area. I cant say that I did a lot of random driving around out that way unless I was headed toward somewhere.
There is/was an older gentleman that built a nice big shop out on West Gowen that was collecting some interesting things. He had a whole parking lot full of old trucks and things by the time I left. I cant remember his name.. I do remember a nice 58 Apache he had under a shelter on the side of the shop. I was working on my 58 at the time and stopped and talked with him a few times. He was retired and I guess he decided he wanted to play with old trucks.. weirdo..
I pulled the razor grill that I have yet to install on my GW out of a U-pull yard out in Nampa (or was it Caldwell?). They had 3 or 4 out there at the time, including a J-truck with the Levi interior that really had no business in there. THey had 4 or 5 late model GW's that were complete that the owner had not decided whether to part out or not.
There is also a guy out in Garden City that used to work for Jeep and has a shop with a bunch of GW's that came and went. I looked at a few of his, but his prices were too high for me considering the work needed. THey were probably worth it, but not to me. He would probably be a great resource if you are working on your rig.
I did look at the rig on Wagonworld. I dont have room for any more projects, or even any more vehicles at this point. Would like to have the side trim and badges though..

The U-pull-it yard is in Nampa, actually called Jalopy jungle. The guy there said they always try to keep around a dozen or so FSJ's there. They had quite a few grand wags, 2 70's cherokees, a '67 wag, and a few 70's wags.
There is a '64 or '65 Gladiator with a camper on it sitting in the holding yard as of this morning. It looks nice, maybe they are selling it complete. It has the 230 in it.
Gowen Rd has some very cool old time wrecking yards off of the side roads with tons of vehicles going back to the 30's. Haven't seen any FSJ's but have seen an FC and willys pickup.
I saw that maroon Super for sale too.

My vinyl roof is beat-up from sittin in Southern California for the last 40 years. Has anyone stripped their's off and painted the roof?
Like to know how it came out before I start on something that might not be worth the effort.

My roof is severly rotted too, almost to the point of deciding to patch in a donor roof or finding a donor body.
The other thought I had was to neutralize or encapsulate the rust, patch the few rust out spots, and put a durabak or rhino lining on the roof, then either leave it as-is if it looks good, or put a new vinyl top over it.
That's the bummer with vinyl, If moisture gets under it, it will kill the sheetmetal.

I wouldn't think it would look very good with rhino liner etc., on it but some patches, a good spary on liner for strength, then a new vinyl roof seems like a good option.

That's what I thought. I know it looks nothing like the original vinyl. Ideally, I would cover it again with the same pattern vinyl with the seams, but would want something on the metal to protect it from moisture.
Rhino lining is thick, but something like durabak is thinner, and the vinyl can go over that. Or maybe a marine type paint, or maybe something I haven't heard of yet. Or is the vinyl itself supposed to be a decent water barrier?
The most severe rot through was a few areas where the luggage rack attached, so I'm sure that was a leakage point.

I've already got my vinyl top, when I get it repainted I'm gonna paint the top with zerorust paint. as long as your vinyl is not ripped water won't get in.

There is some stuff that a hot rod guy markets called Lizard Skin. It goes on real thin and is supposed to work great. They use it on both sides of the surface whenever possible, like inside of body panels and anywhere else they can fog it in. It is also sandable and paintable, so it should be un-noticeable under a vinyl top. I saw it in a magazine, but I didn't bring it home. I can get the info later if anyone needs it.

It better be a 327 wag your restoring or it is sacrilege to install gunsights! :)

I don't think the 327 died with the gunsights. the one I spoke of with the rhino lined top was a 67 with a 327 and the 67 I owned with the 327 had no gunsights. my 68 WILL have those ornaments!!! :) . kenall, how's the progress on notacj?

I have removed the destroyed rocker panels and will (after paint)
replace them with square tubing angled at ea end to match the shape of
the wheel wells, then paint them black. I have dissasembled the np208s
that will replace the PT QT. I have both a dodge version and a GM
version. Depending on which version has the favorable front yoke location
ill have to modify the OE GM adaptor.

Interesting.
I've seen more Supers without the gun sights than with them. I bet Ken's is the only one I have ever seen IRL with the sights.
Mine doesn't have them and there is no evidence there ever was. I also never saw any on Truesdell's or Marski's.
Perhaps they disappeared around mid-'67.
If I ever got lucky and found a set, I would put them on.

well, I just spoke with my grandfather. My super is actually a '67, has an AMC 360 mated to the original TH400/D20 via an adapter....and has gunsights!!! That is, it has one gun sight as one was ripped off by some jackass at Boise State University while it was parked there some 15 years ago.
The dana 20 needs work, and I imagine after sitting so long the 400 and 360 will need some work, but the 360 only has about 65k original miles on it. I really need to get this thing into my own backyard...maybe I need to take a road trip on out to Boise!
