Alright, this has always been a bit of mystery to me. I normally just tinker with the timing and advance springs until I get what I feel is the most from the motor. Is there a better way? A formula of some type, atleast to get a baseline curve to start with? Such as base timing + 27 degrees mech advance maxing at 4400 rpm? How about what the stock setup has for curve? Here's the engine specs: 401 bored .030, 10:1 compression, performer 1405 carb, perf cam, perf intake, MSD offroad ignition and distributor. I've tried the tinkering thing, switching springs and such, and can't seem to get it right. I'm either pinging from detonation at some point or sacrificing a decent idle. I can't seem to find that "happy median" to have both! Please help if you can, I'm getting frustrated!
