View Full Version : Moab trip name

Since Moab is pretty off road specific and there isn't a specific "moab events" thread, I figured I would post this poll here.
What is the consensus for the name of the Moab trip?
My vote is for "FSJ Slickrock Incursion: Project Alpha" for the military black-ops non-specific undertones.

That is boring... doesn't leave any openings for t-shirts or bumperstickers! Everyone knows about the performance gains FSJ's get from cool offroad bumperstickers!
Oh, alright. If it has to be a word that starts with "in", let it be the Moab FSJ Invasion. :p
Everyone uses "Invasion" and it brings to mind massive quantities of troops running roughshod over third world terrain. Whereas the black-ops undertones of "Incursion" bring to mind highly trained specialized teams on a tactical mission and yet lack the sexual overtones of other black-ops keywords like "Insertion."

I voted for other. The cutie stuff doesn’t have much to do with wheeling. Invasion is already a familiar fsj event so why not continue to use it. Everyone could just continue to use “fsj invasion” and put a name in front of it. Moab FSJ Invasion 2007.
I’m going to try and make it. http://www.dakotacom.net/~jeepster/tipshades.gif

hehe... i just realized how far the boobie safari is in the lead... ill have 3 bumperstickers please

haha, this reminds me of the time when i was a senior in high school. they wanted a name for our graduation, and i submitted "Keep on Truckin' ". everyone thought it was great and it actually won the vote. but the teachers axed the name b/c it wasnt classy enough. ended up using "we are the future" or something gay like that.

Ok... So this will be a long post. If you don't want to read it all press "page down" a couple of times.
In all fairness I would like the name of the trip to reflect the opinions of the INTERNATIONAL full size Jeep community represented on this site. I do not intend to violate the family values of this site (Krista... are you with me?) with the name "full size boobie" (which in all fairness is singular, not plural if I may point that out) IF it does in fact win out. I don't want this to be something that I choose by myself and impose on everyone that attends because I think it is amusing (which I honestly do think at this point). I think that it is only fair as I wouldn't want anyone else on here imposing on me in a similar manner.
I set the expiration of the poll for 90 days from the exact minute that I posted it so there is still plenty of time to hear everyones opinion. I felt that three months was appropriate since the MOAB trip is five months away! Since the poll feature is limited to 10 polling items and the ones used came from the Moab attendee thread, I would like to open it up to ideas beyond even those posted above. So here are the rules as I see them:
ALL votes from IFSJA members with a JOIN date of December 2006 and beyond will NOT BE CONSIDERED A LEGITIMATE VOTE! NO EXCEPTIONS.
Everyone with a JOIN date before DECEMBER 2006 gets one vote.
If you want to vote for something that is not listed, vote "other" in the poll at the top and state in your EARLIEST post to this thread (edit you post if that is what is required) what you vote for. Please keep them within the rules outlined by your membership in this forum. If others like the name you propose... they will use them in their post.
When the polling ends on February 28th, 2007 the votes will be tallied and the winning name is final. SIMPLE AS THAT.Four rules... Funny thing is I thought there would be more when I started listing them. I feel this is the only way to perform this task democratically...
Think I am kidding? Here is the Moab attendees list as I have just edited it:
http://www.jasonhabrock.com/jeep/moab.gif
To all the nay-sayers... Steve, -joe and I am sure others... What life is worth living if you can't raise some eyebrows and stir the pot a little? Life is REALLY short... why not have some fun with it. I still love you guys even if you want to call it "Moab in a Full Size Jeep" or something like that.
To this end, I will say this, I am for the first time in my life considering putting a boobie grille on my beloved BRUTUS for the greater cause that is "MOAB Full Size Boobie Safari 2007." There I said it! First Flint comes out and admits that he loves rhino's but hates the publicity surrounding them and now I am pouring my GRILLE (instead of "real") feelings out to YOU... FSJ masses! HEAR ME NOW! No the rhino is not on sale! It will be put back on upon return from Moab.
On a sidenote, I posted this poll while I was at work, laughing as I left my "full time job" to go play pool on my pool league. A couple of beers and a few cut-shots later I return home to a couple of PM's and a decent "stir" of activity in both Moab threads... almost brings a tear to my eye! It took those couple of beers for me to notice that I miss-spelled "suggestions" when posting this poll and spelled it "suggustions!" DOH! It humors me that it took those beers to notice it... but the lack of beers to type it!
There I am done!
EDIT: If the mods will keep an eye on this thread and lock the thread down after the polling is done I would appreciate it.

Since we are getting all mushy and letting our feelings out... I am touched you would consider installing an egg crate on Brutus there Jason.
I am not going to vote. I have been going to Moab each Spring since 01. Some years I get in a Fall trip too. That first trip was to watch and take it in. The rest of my trips there with an FSJ have been to wheel the trails for fun. None of it was organized prior to going except to get the Jeep ready. If y'all wanna call it something, that is all good with this Jeepaholic.
Stepping up on the podium for a minute...
This gathering is not an event, is unofficial and has no leaders... Everyone who comes should know this. Words taken from the Ouray Invasion home page apply here:
"Our FSJ gatherings are totally unorganized and unofficial, but that doesn't mean it has to be disorganized. No person on any trail ride can be designated "the leader", "the guide" or any name that gives the impression that they are in charge. All that show up are their own leader. A person can head up the trail and the others have the option to follow the Jeep in front of them. Each driver is responsible for their own actions and the occupants of their vehicles."
We nearly had a catastrophie on Corkscrew trail in Ouray this July. Even though most of us can laugh about it now, it could have easily been a much different outcome. We need to all realize that Jeeps break. Wheeling Moab can break a rig much faster than wheeling the mountains in Ouray, in my opinion. There is usually vehicle carnage of some kind on each trail ride I have been on in Moab. Everyone who comes needs to be sure they are prepared to meet the slickrock full on. If your Jeep doesn't have low range, good brakes and working Ebrake (to name a few), then stay on the pavement. I am not trying to scare anyone, just pointing out that it is important to come prepared. It is worth it to be hauling a few hundred pounds of spare parts too. I carry more with me to Moab than to Ouray.
Thanks.....back to the unscheduled madness of picking names... ;)

Too true. Off-roading is not safe and thus responsibility is ALL on the driver to make the right choices. It requires self-reliance, some learning, and a rig in good shape with proper equipment for the task. That's what's most appealing about 4-wheeling to me.
There's some good checklists on CFSJA (http://www.cfsja.org/ under "On the Trail") and info on the web (Google is your friend) and in many books, such as 4-Wheeler's Bible (http://www.4x4books.com/4wb.htm).
I carry a whole different load-out for the Moab trip; all the engine parts I'd take to Ouray plus all kinds of spare drivetrain parts... and a stack of flashlights. :D

Personally, I could give a rats rear end what we call this gathering. All I care is that finally the FSJ crowd is making a conserted effort to get a group in Moab. The less frills the more fun it will be.
Side note: Prepare your rigs for hard abuse Moab has a nice way of ***** slapping you when you least exspect it. If you have ever wanted to wheel in Moab, this is a great time as it appear we will have a great mix of Moab vets. It is always nice your first time to have someone looking out for ya.

Did all the other vowel keys get stuck?
Are you getting a discount on 'I's at the bumper sticker printers?
I have been in the military and I have been to Moab... just not offroading.
All the "I" words are the best words that come up when you look up "invasion" in the T-H-E-S-A-U-R-U-S... Ever used one?

That was a cool video you posted of that ride on lions back. How steep is it? Degree of incline?
Subconscious
12-24-2006, 12:59 PM
I don't have any video, just some photos. That's someone else. I've seen a couple videos out there, they're pretty cool.
The incline changes. There's at least three distinct areas. I didn't put an inclinometer on it, so I don't know the inclination for certain...
1) The Bottom - this is the steepest part, estimate 30 degrees, probably about 50 feet long or so. Going up, all you can see is the sky through your front windshield here. Hope you took a good line.
2) 50 feet to about 1/3 of the way up - the lowest incline, estimate 20 degrees. It's here that you realize that there is, in fact, no where to turn around, and no way to stop without the distinct chance that you won't have the momentum to get going UP again.
3) The last 2/3, pretty steep, estimate 25 degrees. You can barely see the ground, about 30 feet ahead of you. Follow the tire tracks, hope they didn't go over the edge. You can't see the ground where it starts to level off toward the top, so it looks like you're riding off to nowhere.
Eventually, we came to the first place level enough for me to comfortably stop, and not be worried about getting going again. Had to get out, relax a bit. Pondered what kind of trouble I'd be in if I left the Jeep right there and walked down.
Next came the World's Scariest Three Point Turn. There's enough room to turn a little Jeep, but it's very unnerving, looking out into space, edging toward it, cranking the wheel.
My little Jeep at the time had an automatic. I put it in low range, and first gear, but I was still riding the brakes pretty hard all the way down. Had to scout the way down - as you see in the photo, you can see where you're going on the way down, but there still is opprotunity to take the wrong path.
It was a rush I'll never forget. Nothing else is quite like it.

Would be cool to get a couple more folks on board. I think we'll have an unprecedented crowd this year! Can't wait for warmer weather, camping, wheeling, as well as beer (Moab Brewery).
I thought it'd be an easy few fixes to the rig before the trip, now I'm faced with major engine work (engine swap at a minimum). Whee. I fully intend to make it but unless all goes well I may be seeking a passenger seat. :o
Speaking of weather, if you didn't know, Moab can get pretty chilly day or nite and often snows and/or rains in April, so prep accordingly. It can also get hot (duh, it's a desert) so just in case be sure to carry loads of water. There's a neat natural spring outside of town you can fill up at daily.

Hi,
My boyfriend and I have been lurking on this board for a long time, though I think this is my first post, and we were thinking about maybe going to this Moab run.
As for the boobie theme, FSJ boobie safari doesnt sound very apealing to me for a few reasons, I dont see myself hunting or searching for full size boobies in a FSJ, I dont personally think I would put myself in the "Full size boobie" category so the name doesnt make me feel included.
The name FSJ boobie tour seems more fitting to me, but I havent seen the people on the board... maybe we should go with manboobie.
I like the shirt idea though :p
On the other hand the names with a military-ish theme brings thoughts of the FSJeeps rescuing the baby jeeps that get stuck and seems more like a "big and tough" name.

3rd - Y'all, this is all good and fun, but we should pass on the bOObie name or references thereof so we don't get ourselves in hot water with anyone. :o
Meanwhile, bring on the FSJs! We are invading Moab in April!

Thanks for the welcome, Im not offended by it, i just thought there has to be a better word than safari which usually means hunt.
Thanks for the picture, The name makes more sence now, I have heard of an egg crate grill but havent heard the boobie refrence for it.
I just figured it was a play on the term "headlights". ;)
But having boobie in the name doesnt offend me a bit, I just didnt think a full size boobie hunt sounded like something id be welcome to.
Kinda like "Only http://www.ifsja.org/forums/vb/attachment.php?attachmentid=3083&d=1168143068 need apply" haha
Let me talk to my boyfriend before putting us as tentative, hes been working on the jeep and it should be done soon, but I dont want to say we might go until I ask him if we will be ready by then.

Thanks for the reply. The pic you referenced was a bit out of line for this family site. We have some FSJers here who are single men and full of themselves. When you mention bOObie, they get all wacky and we feed them agave to calm them down a bit. :D

I get it now... the "safari" came from the baby Jeep Moab trip name "Easter Jeep Safari."
I hope you guys can make it. It sounds like we will have 10+ FSJ's there!
Flint... I like bOObies! Where's my agave?

I dont want to get anyone in trouble, it was just the perfect example of what came to mind with full size boobie safari
Its hard to believe that there are still FSJers that are single, the Jeep alone adds at least 30% more attractiveness.
The percent gets higher with more agave... pass some over this way too!
I was going to let my boyfriend introduce us if we decided to go to Moab but his account was not old enough to vote. I will try to convince him to post something. Neither of us have ever been to Moab and we dont know anyone with vehicles that can go offroad anymore so I would love to get more involved in this.

I don't mind the tall ones! I am saying that I want an athletic one that uses creativity rather than being lazy to get in.
Good luck with the Cherk and the gfriend!

I gotta say, boobies are definately the front runner. I will start designing shirts one of these days when I have 5min of freetime.
Well, since you brought it up... Here is the grille I delivered to Jason this week. It is a 50 footer or more. Enjoyed the visit Bro!

I got a Moab scab on my fender last year. It adds character.
