I'm in the middle of hooking up my M12000 on my winch bumper and I don't know where the fairlead goes, top or bottom.
I figured out that the 4 holes goes outard and the 2 holes goes on the bottom. But my whinch spools in rolling away from you. This seems weird because all other M12000's I've seen spools toward you.
Help me out before I cut the wrong hole in my bumper!!!

if i remember correctly wouldn't the 4 holes go down and the 2 holes go out? the two are what the fairlead hooks to and the 4 for mounting to the bumper. am i missing something?

**** it! This is the confusion I all ready had!!
Lets see now, this is the info I got.
If this is looking at it straight on (front), which it looks like. then that's the 4 holes facing forward.

And this showes the line is spooled from the bottom. But mine spooles on the top. Is there a chance I have a goofy old M12000?

You do not have the cables on the motor attached to the wrong studs do you? Therefore makeing it spin one way when it should be spinning the other. The picture is correct and it should spool in from the bottom.
There are 3 studs on the winch motor, F1 F2 and A. Remove the F1 and F2 and swap them around, that should make it sping the other way. The winch is made to pull one way, the only reason for the spool out feature is to let the tension off the line. When you are spooling it out with the motor you are going aganst the brakes, witch is what keeps it from spooling back out when you stop pulling. So think of it like driveing with your parking brake on, you can do it, but its gonna be hard on the brakes. Dont know where the brakes are in them. But the probably are not cheap. Chances are yours might be wore out. Your best bet might be to call warn tech support and talk to them about the situation.
