I was bolting up my new block to the tranny tonight. When i went to bolt the torque converter to the flex plate i went to spin the converter to line up the holes and it only spins about 1/4 around and makes a loud BANG.I can spin it back in the opposite direction and same thing happens. It is not bound up, it is easy to spin(one finger).I know that the converter should spin freely behind the flex plate. Is it possible or has anyone ever seen something come apart inside the converter such as one way bearing or something else that could be causing this? I am really bummed as I dont want to pull the motor again but....... any help is greatly appreciated.

Give details on this...rebuilt tranny? rebuilt motor? Let's narrow it down a little.

yep ive seen this happen a lot of times the converter has a weight welded to it (727/999) and when you try to spin the converter the weight hits the flex plate when i pull these i spray paint the last bolt hole and converter so i can line them up on install now you will have to loosen the bellhousing bolts and pry the trans and block apart and spin the converter until you get it lined up then tighen it all up ............but wait till next time.......

AHH-so it has to be in the correct position before bolting up. I have never seen that happen on another car-it had me perplexed. Thanks a lot i just let out a big sigh of relief...

YEP, happened to me and I was so mad I coulda eaten wire and **** nails. After some deliberation I discovered I could take a long screwdriver and wedge it behind the flexplate and pry it forward just enough to turn that f***ing counterweight past and get the bolt holes to line up. Good luck...might be a good idea to wear a good pair of leather gloves...I bout maimed myself.
