after the flop ive decided im gonna do a chop-top and cage it. The only thing is that I want to save the windshield so its still legal to drive (on those rare nice days). Any suggestions for this? Should i build the cage around the stock window frame (which is bent really bad right now) or are there any windows off of baby jeeps that fit the waggys pretty good? Also, does anyone have any suggestions for the cage, i have some ideas but im still open for suggestions. Unfortunately I dont have enough computer skills to draw something but i like this one: http://s18.photobucket.com/albums/b128/welchct/jeep%20FSJ/?action=view&current=IM000536.jpg

If i go with that design, im going to truss a lot more and would like to build it so i still have a windshield. Ill try to get some pics up when i start but i still need to go pick up the steel and other stuff first so it may be a while.

not bad design, butn as far as front windsheild humm I think andrew tried that one and the cage ended up breaking the window anyway I'm going exo on mine.

these rigs are really heavy and you need to beef up that windshield area for sure. the design is kinda square but whatever tickles your pickle.

no doubt, if i build a cage it will be much more beefed up and wont be as square, im just using that as a starting point. The hardest part is trying to figure out how to build the cage and keep my windshield from getting busted up again

go exo on the outside of the windshield and build the rest accordingly. i don't see that big of an issue.

Would be sweet to cobble an M715 windshield with fold-down capabilities on there...

 I've already started gathering parts for mine.
I am making templates from a 715 so I dont have to cut up a truck to do it. I thought of keeping the stock glass/frame and tying it to the cage. Then using a J-truck roof section (which I have...with brow) as a half top. The thought of a folding windshield got the better of me and the die is cast.

We have a baby coming in a week or so and I'm not doing jack to it for a while.

BTW I've heard tell of a similar Chief in VA. 715 windshield and fenders. Anyone seen it?

Haaaahaaa... that is my old jeep I just took that cage to the scrap yart on friday. I actualy rolled it a few times and had to cut the body off cause non of the doors would close and the rear sides were folded out like wings. held up real well. witch I am kind of suprised considering it needs a rear X and my welds were not very good I built that abot 3 years ago I had just turned 16 and had no clue what I was doing. I had no help from any one exept what I had read in mags. and online so I prety much just started bending tubes and cobling crap together as best i could. I kind of wish thoes pix would go away but we all got to start some where. Oh well live and learn. I now have a small off road shop and have built a few other vehicles such as my buggy, a cherokee, comanchee, dodge 1500 and a bad *** cab truck on rocks that I am building right now for a friend.

I actualy screwed one thing up about that desighn. I mounted it about 4-6 Inches lower than the stock roof to make it look like a copped top (low rider style) and mounted the seats real low. but it made it real hard to see over the grill. thank god I nerrowed it or I would have been blind

the front is 1.75x.120 HREW and the rear is 2" sced.80 pipe I was not as coserned about the rear because I did not plan for people riding back there (I took out the rear seat). I dont use pipe fo any thing any more but its what I had sitting in my uncles shop so I used it.

I know there has been a lot of debate as to what to use for a cage. I have a lot of 2-3/8" tube left over from oil field stuff (J55). I dont know if that would be hrew/crew or what but the thickness is greater than .120 which i notice is what a lot of people are using. This is some really heavy duty stuff, so im thinking it should be fine for a cage, any comments on this?

it will be heavy. and maybe alittle harder to bend. other than that,go for it
