I have a J10 that I am putting a 14 bolt under.I am figuring out what I want to do as far as spring mounts.I am going to inboard the spring mount to under the frame and was wondering instead of doing a complete mount and adding extra lift to the back of the spring when the shackle is inverted could I set it up like a chevy front spring mount? The part I am talking about is where the shackle mounts to the frame on the rear of the chevy front springs?Could I set up the rear of my rear springs this way by boxing in the frame and drilling a hole for the shackle then putting in a cross tube for the shackle bolt?
I am worried that after inverting the shackle and putting the mount on the the bottom of the frame that it will get alot more lift than the front mount and possibly cause driveline era's or give me more lift than I want.
The truck now has 5 inch blocks that I'm going to remove when I do all this but If I calculated everything ring inverting the schackle and mounting it to the bottom of the frame will give me something like 7 inches of lift.So I was hoping that if I can do it by gong threw the frame it would keep the lift down.
Any thoughts?
I aint 100% sure about what you are intending to do, but I was out looking at my J20 just tonight comtemplating the exact same thing for the rear, and being worried about getting too much lift too (just doing 4" up front.)
It sounds like you are talking about sleeving the frame and running a shackle down from the sleeved portion instead of just cutting off the OEM mount and welding it back on the underneath side of the frame right?
If so, then yes, it would minimize the lift height, but I'm still thinking it is going to be touch to avoid netting a huge amount of lift from this operation.

I am not 100% sure what you are asking as I am not that familiar with chevy spring setups.
Here is what I did FWIW:
2" lift spring
5" shackle (with the angle it is at gives me 3" lift)
2" hanger
3" from moving the springs under the frame
TOTAL 10" lift
What amount of lift are you trying to get? It sounds like 5 isn't enough but 7 is too much? So 6" lift is what you are going for?
Here is a pic of my setup:

Is this kinda what you are talking about:

Brutus, it looks like you used a section of rectangle tube for the spring mounts? What size was it?

The primed picture is exactly what I am talking about. Is this an exceptible way of doing it?The amount of lift I am looking for is to stay about the same as it has now but remove the 5 inch block.I am inboarding to use the 14 bolt mostly not to add lift. The front has 4 inch spring and I want to stay close to that.

BRUTUS,
Thanks for the pics. I'll be taking the same approach on a CJ-10a tug that I'm converting for road/offroad use. I'll probably be running front Waggy springs SUA on the rear, and will also go through-frame on the shackle hanger to minimize lift.
My question is about the plate on the outside of the frame in the pic above. Did you add it just to give the spring hanger more support on the frame? I was just planning on welding a hanger underneath in essentially the same position, but didn't plan on plating the outside of the frame.

Seems like if the frame was sleeved for a bolt bushing it'd work just fine.

The way it worked out when I put the springs on reversed... the front hanger sat RIGHT ON the curve of the frame. I put the plate in to extend the straight part of the frame so there aren't any wierd bending situations on there.
Here is a better pic of this... keep in mind that I put a 3/16" cap over the front of the hanger up to the frame to give it even more support.

So you can see if I didn't put the plate in, I would only get about 2.5" of weld to the frame... and it would be AWAY from the spring eye.... not good.

That is a picture of RampageFSJ's truck. Here is a link to the buildup thread. http://www.ifsja.org/forums/vb/showthread.php?t=51788
I am not sure if he sleeved it or how but you can send him a PM or reply to his lift thread.

Thanks for the explanation and additional photo, BRUTUS. Much appreciated. It looks like my spring hanger will probably be located a little further up the rise in the frame than yours.

Thank you
I actually got it through a local 4x shop but it is the same thing that BJ's sells I am pretty sure..

The reason I didn't buy these from BJ's is that they don't post the length eye-to-eye for the shackle! They only list it as 1" lift... which means ZERO to me! I didn't have the time to email BJ's and find out what the length was so I got them through another shop... so if they were wrong... they could deal with it. It is also listed as "front use only" which makes no sense to me as an engineer!!! They work fine on the rear for me!

ok that works i bought some chevy lowering shackles for mine that i cut down to size and i have 5 inches eye to eye on those so they will go in place in the back with either my stock spring with an add a leaf or maybe the rancho 4044 2" lift springs so the rear shackle is on the end of the frame givin me what 2-3 more inches of wheel base?
