Came across a '66 J300 and I'm wondering if the 4-speed in this truck could be swapped into an '80s vintage V-8 J-10 without too much trouble? The T98 transmission (at least I think that's what it is)is behind a Jeep/Kaiser(??)327 V-8. Not sure about bellhousing differences, input shaft lengths/splines/pilot bushing sizes, bellhousing to transmission spacers, pilot bushing etc. I know the T98 preceded the T-18, but don't know differences. Thanks.

According to Kaiser the T98A was only used through the 230 OHC era. The 232's and 327's in 66 ran the wide ratio T-18.

Thanks, Joe. Guess I'll crawl under it with a tape measure and see if lengths (bell housing, spacer, etc.) match up with later long shaft version of Jeep T-18 used behind 360 V-8. Advanced adapter catalogue indicates there were five or six different input shaft lengths for T-18...

The T-98 had 10 1/4" stick out and is too short for the full size truck bell housing.
The T-18 (will most likely be stamped T18 on the driver's side of the case) has 14 1/8" stick out on Jeeps. Both cases are the same size and use the same bolt pattern, but the T-98 has the 1 1/16" shaft and T-18 uses a 1 1/8" shaft.
The transmissions will interchange, but you would need to put a longer shaft in the T-98.
You will want to note how many splines are on the shaft you use and match the proper clutch.
The reference you had found to a number of different shaft lengths refers to use of the T-18 in different makes of trucks. Jeep T-18s all use the 14 1/8" stick out.

Thanks, Elliott. Your message clarifies a few things. I already have another T-18/D20 sitting on my garage floor. It has a 13-and something inch stickout. I know it came out of a late '70s V-8 J20. It uses a short bellhousing and a 4.75 inch spacer. But I noticed the transmission tunnel cover had been slightly "modified" to allow the shifter to come out about an inch farther forward from the hole in the tunnel cover. If the 14 inch stickout is true across the board, it appears that I probably have a bellhousing/spacer from a T176 and a transmission from who knows what.... Think I'll take a closer look at the driveline in that '66 J3000.

If the case says T-18 A on the side it has the granny 632 gears, otherwise it's a crap shoot if the got stuffed in the case at some point.

After posting my last message, I went back and measured the adapter and the T-18 in my garage. The stickout is 13 and an eighth, and the trans/bell housing adapter looks like a specific design to link the T-18 to a T-15/T-10/T-176 style bellhousing. I also rechecked the tunnel cover again. The modified area was at the rear of the factory stamped hole, and not at the front as I was thinking (someone probably hacked it a little to get the gearbox installed without removing the cover). Anyway, the factory hole is in exactly the right place for the overall length I'm dealing with. All that to say that the 13 and an eighth stickout appears to be "factory". So I'm scratching my head.

In any case, I do appreciate the tips on the T98/T-18 differences and identifiers. Very helpful.
