im working a deal on a molory duel point disributor, but i was also wondering whats the cheepest way to upgrade to an electronic ignition?do the later grand wags use electronic and if so how would it compare to the malory duelpoint? i'll probaly get it anyway to use on one of my projects, would one work beter than the other on a built motor? what about stock? would i need a high output coil?
I know that you're working on this with a list/forum member and I'm not trying to botch a sale here...But why would you want a dual point?
I ran one about 30+ years ago in my strip/street days of hot rods and the only thing I really remember about it was; it was big bucks and for HIGH rpms which an AMC motor will never see(well maybe just 'once') and if you don't like setting up a points style dizzy you're really not going to like dual points for sure.
I haven't keep up much with serious HiPo/racing stuff for years but I'm surprised the dual points are still being sold/bought. Maybe they've been modified for recent use but I can't imagine for our rigs there would be any benifit over a stock elec ignition(and I like old points dizzies) or an MSD/TFI set-up? Mallory dual points are excellent quality equip but expensive and they used to be anyway a bit over-kill for our use and they aren't user friendly.
If I'm missing something here please let me know...I'm here to learn smile.gif

I think Mallory make a kit to convert it to electronic. It might not work on it though if its real old. There was a link to a site posted by TPIGUY on here. The guy does electronic conversion on old distributors so search for that. The post was about HEI maybe? It might just be wise to get a Unilite if you really want a Mallory.

i looked it up in the sumit catolog . mallory makes a convertion kit for 105.95 coverts it to a mallory unilight unit. there ready to go unilight setup is 289.95. i guess if i can trade into it and add the convertion down the road would be the way to go. i would probaly use it in my 401 tow vehical project.thats going to be a dayly driver kind of hotrod jeep.

Your '78, '79 and '88 would already have an electronic ignition (more properly speaking, a magnetically-triggered electronic ignition). I doubt the Mallory version of the same thing is going to be $200 better than the Duraspark II unit your trucks use now.
The only real way to improve it as a system (apart from TFI upgrades, which are independent of the type of trigger used) is to upgrade to a more reliable or powerful aftermarket spark-box.

sandmanb, like the other guys not trying to mess up a deal but IMHO a dual-point is not the way to go for the street. There was one on my '70 Monte Carlo when I first got her and wouldn't ever use one again because of the extra work setting points.I went with a Mallory Unlilite Dist/Hyfire/Promaster coil and it works very well together on my 454.With reliability of electronics today that's the way to go from just about any brand.Main thing is good quality parts(wires ,cap etc).Good luck

coolram,i'll use the unilight convertion with it,coverting it to a unilight, along with the hyfire and a hot coil.wouldent this be a good setup for my steat tow vehical 401?

It's a solid ignition.I used a full Unilite dist( $130.00 15 years ago,oh how times change)when I switched.Tempted to borrow Promaster coil off my Monte Carlo but didn't.Just went to the big cap and MSD wires and Accel coil on my GW.She's already electronic so just good to upgrade parts.I don't know how much Hyfire has changed since I got mine which I had to make my own harness for it(wasn't difficult, just not like what's availible now). And like Barry said with your's already electronic just adding a better trigger box with the TFI convert is great for street/tow/offroad use.Good luck
