Problems is that there is so many versions of the T18 throughout the years. AFAIK most fords have the 7" input shaft but there are some with the 11". Ford rarely put T18s on 4wd vehicles. Jeep used 7, 11 and 18" input shafts, maybe even more. The shorter ones came under Cjs and don't have the lower granny gear. Since all are 4wd versions the outputs vary. Some have the texas pattern for the D20 some rounded for the NP208.
I'm sure there's more.

well, there are some variation in housings. as far as jeep t18s go,the pre 80 trannys have a differnt bolt pattern for the trasnfer case adapter than the post 80 t18/208. the reverse cluster is on the opposite side of the tranny, and the pto cover on the post 80 t18 is cast in and not removeable. on the other end,the pattern for the tranny to spacer looks the same as the pre 80 trans, but the spacer and bell are different. the pattern for the post80 bell is actually the same as the pattern for the spacer, wich is,i believe, the pattern for a cj-version of the t18 where the bell bolts directly to the tranny.
as was mentioned, the t18 did not seem to be used much in 4wds. the couple ive heard of were in front of 208s. usually a 4wd ford got a 435/205.
the bell bolts directly to the tranny on a ford, using a sort input shaft. belhousings are easy to swap and for the most part bolt on,makeing a ford t18 or 435 a bolt on to an amc motor with a custom pilot bushing.
the rear pattern on the ford 4wd t18 and 435 is the same as the post 80 jeep t18. the 2wd versions of the ford t18 and 435 are different, with a square pattern(top and bottom bolts are spaced differently on the 4wd adapter, makig it more triangluar) so the 4wd adapter is not swappable onto a 2wd tranny
for the most part i believe the internals are swappable among t18s,and i even with some t98 parts,so you can mix an match factory parts to your needs.
you will just have to use the appropriate housing. for example, you cannot take a ford 2wd t18 and swap nthe tailsahft and adapter for a d20 from ajeep t18, as the rear bolt patterns are differnt.the tailsahft will prolly swap, just not the adapter. if you wanted a short t18 with a d20 you would have to assemble the ford input shaft/bearing retainer into the jeep case with the d20 adapter.
or,if you want a 208 behind a t18,you cannot swap the post 80 t18 adapter/tailsahft into the pre80 tranny.you have to use the whole thing,or swap in a short inputshaft into that housing of your needs were for a short inputshaft t18/208.
there are some differences in the bell spacers/seals. my 77 t18 does not have a front seal  it has a goofy spiral cut on the inside of the bearing retainer, wich does keep oil in,but does not keep water out. p*sses me off,as i get water in my tranny pretty much everytime i go wheelin  my friends 83 jeep t18 has a front seal. however, his bell spacer is open to the bell,so mud and funk can fall into it from the bell. he drilled 2 drain holes in the bottom of the spacer and hasnt had a bit of prollem with doing so. my 77 spacer is sealed from the bell,so nothing can get into it.
thats what i come up with off the top of my head, anyway smile.gif what other questions do you have about intercahging, etc.?
