I have been looking at the old 66, and was thinking that the post mount springs are not the strongest design in the world. Has anyone done a lift an fabricated up a different way to attach the springs. I was thinking it could be done, but you would probably have to move the mounts on the axle towards the inside.

I have yet to see a broken post mount, they used them on the 5/4 M715 also, but yeah you could move the springs in under the frame. Jeep probably put the springs outboard for load stability, the earlier Jeeps were mounted under a narrower frame. The post mounted springs are shorter so going to later, longer springs wouldn't hurt your ride any (unless you use the HD J20 springs).

my 66 gladiator has a hell creek 4" lift. The post mount may not look strong but it sure can take a beatin. I also think wider is better imo.

You dont realise how strong those posts are, until you cut them off. I did that conversion on my 64 (67 frame). It took about one bottle of oxygen, countless grinding wheels, and A dozen sawsall blades:sawzall: .http://sore4x4.com/gallery/d/7685-2/springs.JPG

Must have been a small bottle of O2
Not even one grinding stone.
Lot's of pounding.
Probably a bit of blood.

Took me about 3 hours to get them off with a torch, in the dirt.
2 hours to replace them, in the dirt.
About a 1/2 day to get the new axle in place, in the dirt.
It's not that hard but the math must match.

Looks like elbastardo has a shackle reversal going on up front.
Not what I chose, but there is one running around SoAz.
One I saw looked to be an older kit type setup, I really do not know how well that worked for him.
He's a member here but I forget the name.
