Spring rate?

What exactly does spring rate measure? What weight range should I be looking for. I noticed Rusty's 3.5-4" kit with full spring pack in front and add a leafs in back have a 310 lb rate.
Anyone got a simple explanation of this?

If i remember correctly, i believe it is the number of pounds it takes to compress the spring 1 inch, so it takes 310lbs to compress the Rusty's spring 1 inch. Someone please correct me if i am wrong.
