View Full Version : WT Waggy?

I found a very clean, almost rust free 86 waggy for sale but its an odd one because it has, what looks like, WT flares on it. It all looks very original too. Did they ever make a WT wagoneer in 86? I am a little confused. I am going to try to snap a few shots of it tomorrow.

Oh yeah, I got the VIN off of it. 1JCNJ15U1GT187048

The vin indicates model 15 - not a wide track (wide tracks were cheros only, up to 1983, after which chero went little). Probably someone added the flares and possibly w/t axles later. Was it 4 door? I'd like to see pictures.

It is a 4 door but the rear axle looks like an AMC 20. I will try to take a couple of pics tomorrow and post them.

Interesting, should I measure the axle? What's the width of a WT AMC 20? What do you measure from?

usually measured wheel mounting surface (WMS) to WMS if you do a search that spec should be here somewhere, or someone will post it.

Air bag overloads from the looks of it. The fender "jeep" emblems are from a child chero (downsized version) From what I can see, does not look like they split the rear flare to put on the door. They cut the door instead?

Wow Scott. Nice find! This is custom as Chrysler would have never done this. I just can't see it being a factory job. Looks good too. Also looks like WT axels installed. If you get by there again, it would be interesting to see how the rear door fits around the rear fender flare.

There was a company in SoCal that made some Super Chief WT Wagoneers in the mid 70s. That is the closest I have seen to any WT Wagoneers that sold "new". I have a black and white photo from what looked to be a magazine or newspaper article of some kind. I wonder where that image is anyways...

I havent bought it yet. I am not sure what they are even asking. The sign in the back use to say "needs work" but it has been sitting there for almost 3 years. Dont even know if it runs or not. What do you guys think that something like that might be worth??

goldhammer
11-07-2006, 12:59 PM
Depending on overall condition, running 1500 to 2000, not running 1/2 that. Just depends on what you want, and how bad you want it. Out here it would prob. go for a little more than that. Looks like it might also have around a 3-4 inch lift, judging by the block in the last pic.

couple more questions. The year (86) would tell me it has a NP208? Is this a good TC? Is that the selec-trac? Does it have a 4x4 hi and 4x4 lo?

Since it doesn't have manual hubs on the front, it probably has the NP228 that was used for only one year- 1986. Same case as the 229 but without the vicous coupler. It should have a hi-low shifter handle next to the driver on the side of the tranny hump.

yeah,i like it.

very well done custom job.

fulsizjeep
11-07-2006, 01:34 PM
86 was the year of NP228. It could be a 229 depending on actual manufacture date. Since it is an AMC 20 in the back, I would guess 228 tho. The 208 was only available on special package GWs (police or gov't usually) and Jtrucks at that time.

goldhammer
11-07-2006, 02:29 PM
Bearing in mind since it appears the W/T axles were put under it, it could be a 208 and the donor axles could have come from a full time rig. If a 208 the shifter will be on the left side of the trans tunnel between the dash and seat. If the rear diff cover is a plain round dog dish then is a 20. If it looks like the front then a 44. Probably looking at either 2.72's or 3.31's for gearing unless a R&P swap has been done.

DOH... yeah, being it has clearly got some non stock mods, no telling what is actually under it. Knock on the door and see if you can check it out Scott.

I plan on doing that in the next day or so. I will take a pic of the rear doors too. Not sure what a 228, 229 or 208 look like tho :)

The rear body lines above that flare look kinda funky..

But yeah, when you go back make sure to get some closeup pics of that rear flare.

Looks to me like someone welded in a set of J-truck flares, and got the top of the rear just a little bit hot. Looks to be nicely done tho

Crawl under it with a rag to wipe off the backside of the transfer case. You should find a round tag, about 2 1/2 to 3 inches in dia. Will have the model # stamped on it.

This thing is getting more intriguing the more I see of it.

There used to be a guy out of Lubbock who sold flair kits for 4 door wags in the late 70's and 80's. I almost ordered a set and did the conversion. I still have his brochure and instuction manual. Long out of biz since then. That looks like one of his kits.

Thats pretty sweet. You'd just have to fix that little section above the flare where its kinda messed up and you'd have a sweet rig. Do eet!

Back in '77, Brian Chuchua Jeep, Placentia, CA, custom built wide track four door Cherokee's. I have some pictures and have always wanted to build one.

Chuchua put in J10 axles front and rear;front fenders from a J10, and rear flares from a J10 bed. Called it the "Super Chief Wagoneer." $1,500 for the "Super Chief" dealer mod in 1977.

Documented in "Jeep Wagoneer Performance Portolio 1963-1991," Brooklands Books LTD.

I would sure like to know more about this one. If you are not interested I would be. Not likely a Chuchua Jeep mod, but could be.

Keep us posted.

I spoke with the owner today. I guess the work was professionally done at a body shop in CA, a long time ago. It has a J10 front clip and a cherokee drivetrain. Also has dual tanks. He says it runs but hasnt driven in a year and the battery is dead. Typical other issues. rear window motor is out. Driver window track is busted. Most of the gauges dont work. Smog pump is disconnected and some of the vacuum lines are unplugged. Headliner falling down. The floorboards looked solid tho and didnt really see any rust anywhere on the body. I didnt get a chance look at the TC because it was dark out. I thought I saw a driver side drop up front and a center or pass side drop to the rear. Not sure what the NP228/229 is. Anyway, he is only asking $500 for it. He would probably go $450. What do you guys think?

Also, there was a high/low lever on the side of the hump next to the driver seat and a 2wd/4wd selector switch on the dash.

Here's mine.

2559
It started life as a '76 Wagoneer with a good body and bad drivetrain. We also bought a '77 Widetrack Chero with a 401 and a rusted body. It fit our plans perfectly since we wanted a 4 door. We put the entire Chero drivetrain (including the front fenders with the flares and widetrack axles front and rear) into the Wag and put a 4" lift at the same time. Its a little more than a 4" as we put extra springs both front and rear. But not quite 6 inches, 33x12.50 tires, a Hickey Sidewinder Winch (came on the Chero), a receiver hitch (so we can tow our hunting trailer)and we ended up with our perfect hunting rig. It is now in its 5th year on the mountain. We took the rear flares off of the Chero but never got around to welding them on. It gets so muddy sometimes without the rear flares that all you can see is the glass where the windshield wipers are! I have tons of other pics if anyone is interested. For the rear fender clearance we just cut, trimmed and rolled under. Front fenders are the stock Widetrack fenders.
Randy.

Yay! Finally got the WT Waggy in from NV. Havent gone through it too much yet. I am not familiar with the newer rigs, alot more wiring, vacuum, etc. It run pretty good but some of the vacuum lines are loose and the oil needs to be changed. Exhaust leak on the pass side and a little leak from the valve cover. Kinda expected since it sat for a couple of years. So far it appears to have a few electrical issues. The weirdest is that when you turn the lights on a dinging noise comes on and doesnt shut off  Neither the heater, fan or AC make any noise when I turn them on. The rear window doesnt work with the switch in the dash or the key in the back. The windshield wipers/fluid dont seem to have power either. Also, none of the gauges work.....

Where should I start? What do I look for? fuses/breakers?

Anyway, here are a few pics of the $500 Waggy. Despite the amount of work needed to get it road worthy. I would say its worth it for the WT conversion.

Yay! Finally got the WT Waggy in from NV.

Having seen it in person, I have to say my mind is still reeling... it looks SO clean... engine bay, inside, outside. This is a really amazing find at any reasonable price, but to also get a deal on it. Yikes.

What blows me away is the fender flares. If you didn't know you'd think it came that way from the factory (in fact, why didn't they??) I am going to have to compare mine (also 86) side by side to see exactly how they did this... cuz now I want flares! :D

Maybe it has some issues to sort out but what a rare find in such great shape overall. I've only ever seen one other 4-door with flares and that one was a beater. This one is a beauty.
