Hey Guys,
There's a 94 Dodge NV4500 here at work that might be able to snag for a smile smile.gif It needs some work though, the first couple of gears sheared all of their teeth :( So who knows....
My question is- How hard would it be to go to from a TF727 to the NV4500? What Parts would I need to aqquire?
If it would not be a real bad swap I would start picking up pieces here and there.

I'm not sure what you need to do the swap in your Jeep. But I know you'll need a bellhousing, clutch, pressure plate, flywheel, throwout bearing, clutch linkage, pedals, transmission, shifter, maybe a new mount, $200 + for internal transmission parts, I don't know if your 229 will bolt up. It's a good swap, I'm just starting mine, I'm still gathering parts. If you don't decide to do it would you see if the output shaft is good? That's all I need to get, I've got everything else.

64, Should I get all of these parts from another Dodge, or some from a Jeep with a manny tranny? When it comes to transmissions I am in the dark beyond anything but basics.
Thanks,
Andy

I would go to the Advance Adapters web site and see what they have for this swap. Here is a number for Six States in Utah for parts out of Utah 800.453.5703 ask for Carl he's the Jeep guy. I think you are going to need the shifter and clutch disc from a Dodge. Are you going to use manual or hydraulic linkage? Are you switching the transfer case?

64,
I've got the part numbers from AA, a little pricey, but what ya gonna do.....they got- I want.
I've got a 78 J-10 with a 258/t-18a/d20 that I can rob parts out of. The Dodge parts shouldn't be hard to come by.
As far as manual or hydraulic clutch I don't know? What's better?
Definately NOT keeping the 229. I will miss the full time 4wd, but it's just not gonna cut it. I think I've got a line on a couple D300's, so I'll probably go that route. If $$ was not an issue (yeah right) then I would get an Atlas. Cutting 2k loose for a tranfer case would put me permanetely in the dog house though.

If you go with a D300 you'll need a different front axle as those are all pass side drop aren't they? I like manual clutches cause you don't have to worry about getting a leak in the line and losing all your hydrolic fluid. If you've got the stuff from the J with the T-18 it should be manual (I think) so just use that stuff. It'll be easier to make that fit in your wag because you can just make everything fit like it did in the J, or close anyway.

Please keep your eyes peeled for a Dodge output shaft from a 4500. If you have access to complete ones maybe a broken/blown up one will show up sometime with a good output shaft.
Cecil
The reason I'm going to a D300 is that it is a pass side drop just like my front axle. I'd love to have a hydraulic clutch in my Jeep. It would be nice when my rig is flexing to be able to use the clutch without almost needing 2 legs.

64Trvlr: heh, you mean you actually want to be able to shift, eh? Everything in life's a trade of isn't it? Yah, you probably have a pass side drop don't you. ;) I meant for Iron Horse with his '88.

Yeah, I know if I go with the D300 I'll be switching axels. There are not a whole lot of hardy (cast-iron/gear) transfer cases out there that are drivers side drop, unless I'm missing something.
My plow truck is a 76 Chevy 3/4 ton with a 400/th400/np203?205? When it dies, (body/frame) the Wag may get a transplant.
64, I'll keep my eyes peeled for ya.

iron horse, you hit the nail on the head. the only super stout, cast iron, gear drive xfer with a driver side drop is the ford 205 which uses a 31 spline input, and is not easily adaptable unless you also use a ford tranny,or possibly swapped in a chevy input gear and used a chevy tranny.
i swapped my frontend awhile back so i culd use a d300. i was smart enuff not to try and wheel a 229,bt i did go thru 3 aluminum np cases(219,207 and a 208) before i decided a gear drive 300 was the way to go.
i also feel that the pass side diff gives you alot more options for a transfer case.
good luck with your swap smile.gif

Why don't use a 205 divorced transfer case, some early ford's use these transfers,

If the NV4500 came from a 4wd won't the back be open if there is no x-case bolted to it? To use a divorced case he'll need a plate or something to cover and protect the back of the tranny.
