So I can get a really good used (former NEW crate motor, has like 50,000 on it) GM 350 from my friend, only trouble is it broke an oil ring and scratched that one cylinder wall slightly. I know that if bored it would be a perfect builder... Heck, I think I could go .010 over and get it out, but I'm going to go .030 for the hell of it. Best part is, it's cheap. I've been around this motor for years, and helped pull it, so I know that is the only thing wrong with it.

Since I'm going .030 over, the thought crossed my mind to cram in a 400 crank and build a 383 stroker out of it. Anyone used or know anyone using a 383 in a trail rig? I've heard they are quite torquey, which would be great for me. I've never had the opportunity to see one in action, so I'm looking for ACTUAL FIRST HAND input. Not "one time I heard", I wanna know from people that have been around them. So, YAY or NAY?

Also, if you know anywhere to get a GM TBI chip for a 383 stroker that fits the 7747 ECM, and what injectors to use, let me know please.

Do it. I've never wheeled anything with a stroker but I've driven one and it was a monster.
Sorry can't help you with the TBI

I have built quite a few 383's, for the $$$$ you can't beat the performance. Kits out there now with a new 383 crank that makes it really tough to just rebuild it back up as a 350. Be sure your rods are clearanced or they will hit the bottom of the bores. EFI mods I have no clue, don't know a thing about it.

Yup..... I had a 383 in my drag car when I use to bracket race. The 383 seemed to have more torque than a standard 350 IMO.

I'm probably going to be buying a whole stroker kit with a scat crank and scat rods, so I am positive all the tolerances and clearances are right. I want to use hypereutectic dish pistons to keep the temps down while staying in the range of pump gas compression. probably shoot for 9:1 or 9.5:1 with stock size chevy heads. When I take the block to the machine shop I'm going to have him port & polish the heads, 3-angle the valves, and doctor the valvetrain for stock ratio roller rockers. I'll be running a fairly mild cam so that it won't mess up the computer. Something like a 260H, that should keep me in the powerband and not goof up the chip too much. I'm contemplating getting a set of those GM vortec heads though, they seem to be a popular swap with the street rod guys.

Keep the input comming, I want to know as much as I can about it.

Brad W. Did you scrap the bbc with efi? I remember you posting something about it awhile ago?

Nah, i'm going to put the BBC in my m715, the 383 is for the wag. I had originally planned to do the BBC in the wag, but a set of nearly free rockwells has led me to think otherwise. :bluelaugh: :D

I have a 350 ready to go into my J10, I've debated about a 383 but I have a black sheep year 350 and PCM 96. 96-99 they changed the ECU to one you can't pull the chip out of, so not many mods for it.

Your year should be good for mods. Here's two sites I've looked at. Tunercat has your PCM number on it. Looks like TBI has a 383 stroker mod as well. Check em out.

Thanks mikie, but that's not much help. I will be using factory equivalent GM stuff come hell or high water. I had projection before and it was the biggest POS i've ever owned. That and I don't have money to dump on the commander 950, so that's out too.

JpX, thanks for the links. I'll probably go with some tuner cat stuff and a ZIFF adapter so I can emulate and flash on the fly with the laptop on the seat.
