My '87 gw started leaking oil about a month ago, it seems to be leaking from a cracked plate( flat faced / verticle, just behind oil pan) just above where the exaust crosses to the right side of the car, to me it looks like this plate is seperate from the engine and seems to be part of the tranny, why would it be leaking oil and what is that plate called?

the plate you see is a dust cover for the torque converter.....since you have oil there you either have a leakgin rear main seal or a leaking front transmission seal, there is also the possibility of the back of the intake or the valve covers leaking and running down there, but more than likely it is one of your seals down there, thos rear mains are prone to leaking. They are not TOO difficult to fix yourself if you feel like messin with it.

TC, check this out if your doing a rear main seal. It's in the Tech Archives.
Rear Main seal removal (http://www.ifsja.org/tech/motors/rearmainseal.shtml)
Good luck.
Double check the rear of the valve covers 1st. Bad leakers.

An '87 GW that just started leaking oil a month ago? I'd worry if my GW didn't leak!
