I have a 87 GW with stock rims. I put a 3 inch lift on it and now would like to go to a bigger tire. now I know that going bigger is going to screw up my gear rario so I don't want to go larger than 31s. but I was wondering how wide I can go on stock rims before I run into problems with rubbing on springs or fender wells. I don't have the cash for new rims, but if there is a truck in the bone yard that I can pull from I might do that, I just need help on tire/rin size

I've got 32 x 11.50 on my stock wagoneer rims. So far no problems.Some of the tire shops I went to said 12.50s would fit on my stock rims but I found a set of 4 32x11.50s for $75 mounted and balanced so I thats what I went with.
Hope this helps.

Most tire manufactures recomend a minimum rim width of 7" (8" recomended) for a 10.5" thread width tire and an 8" minimum rim width (10" recomended) for a 12.5" tire.
There a a few tire manufactures who now produce 33" dia. tires with a 9.50" to a 10.5" tread width. With these type of tires you can use stock rims and pick up the ground clearance you may need. You will not have the flotation of a 12.5" tread width.
There are few hard and fast rules in building your rig. With safety and quality parts being your foremost with good workmenship. You have to build your rig for the terrain it will be used. The dunes, desert and woods are all different and require different types of mods and equipment.
It would be intersting to see what types of catagories for rigs we could develop like:
<UL TYPE=SQUARE>
<LI>Mud
<LI>Dune
<LI>Rock crawling
<LI>Woods
[/list]
I am sure there are more or possibly comments on my list.
Good luck!
