View Full Version : Ford engine/tranny/t-case swap update
Well I was using the wag to tow my camper but the motor let go. I ran across a truck w/ a 460/C6 for $200, I rebuilt that setup and put it in my 1978 F150. The stroked 351/C6 needed a home so the waggy was a perfect canidate. It is not running yet but after 4 sets of motor mount adapters the components are sitting where the should be. Here is a few pics.
Some of these are repost from my "testing pics" thread but belong here.

Ummm . . . doesn't the motor usually sit the other direction? J/K - looks like a great project - keep it updated.

Those wheels look like they stick out farther than the aluminum 16.5s(iirc) with mud terrains. They look way more serious.
I met two other FSJ members,Kwikrat and litlemek here in town.A meet an greet when the Jeeps are running would be cool. Mine is still waiting to put the 727 together, its in just gotta do the bands an put the valvebody etc. etc. back. Is the BW1339 a part-time case?
Kewl pics!!!

Nice swap but how much power does that 351 make? Those motor mounts look sketchy.

The wheels are 16x10 as opposed to the 16.5x9.75 with the bfgs so they might stick out farther. Meet and greet sounds great, mine should be running soon but no date for sure. If you need a tranny let me know, I have a 727 sitting in my driveway. Also have heads, waterpump, intake, coil, alternator, and misc jeep stuff.
The t-case is a BW1345 typically found in mid-80s broncos and F-series rigs. This one came out of an 1984 F250 w/ 460 and a C6. The low range is the biggest benifit of this case. 2.74:1

Here is pic of a Ford 208 and the BW1345.

You should have seen them before....they started out as 1/4 plate but found out the motor was sitting way too far forward so I drilled new holes 2" back and laminated another 1/4 plate under the original. So they are now 1/2 if my math is correct. I wanted to keep the factory Ford rubber mount and the factory Jeep perches so this was the easiest comprimise. If anything, might have to weld them to the frame perches but I think they will hold up. If not, they will get fixed:sawzall:
Power on the 351 is unknow. It is a 1984 351w block bored 30 over, Coast High stroker kit (393 ci), 10.5 to 1 compression, Scheider custom ground cam, balanced rotating assembly, Ford SVO aluminum heads, Ford SVO full roller rockers, TFI coil, Weiand Stealth intake, Factory Ford Mustang headers. Tranny is stock C6 with B&M shift kit and "towing/hauling" converter.

Thanks, hopefully it won't come to that but it is nice to have options. It looks like those bolt in place of the factory jeep perches???

i welded in novak mounts for the SBC in my '86 GW. they can be bolted in as well. In hindsight, I should have just made my own:rolleyes:

I believe I used a set of motor mounts off a 70's f-100 to swap in my 70 351 cleveland. Drilled a hole in the factory frame mount and in it went. I'll post pics as soon as I get them on a disc if you want. BTW the trans and case is a np435/205.

IIRC...the block mounting postions are different between a Windsor and Cleveland. Be interesting to see the pictures to see what you did.

My 351 cleveland dirt and all.

Thanks for the pics, quite a bit looks different.
1. The Jeep perches only have one hole as opposed to my waggy which has four per side.
2. Your motor looks wider or the frame perches on your truck protrude farther to the center of the truck.
3. Looks a lot like a 351m/400 but then I have never seen a cleveland engine up close.
Mine is getting closer, had to re-re-re-re work the motor mount adapter plates. Good times.

I notice you have a car oil pan rather than the 4wd truck pan, any issues with the dif hitting it?
How is the clearance with the brake booster? Mine is real close but I have those tall valve covers to clear the roller rockers.

The BW 1345 is an excellent choice for a transfer case. If my Ford NP 205 doesn't work out, that is the way I will go.

There are tons of them out there. The only bad thing is the front output is right against the frame rail, meaning there will be a compound angle on the front driveshaft.

1. My perches had a rectangle shaped plate welded to them for the 6 cyl motor mounts to attach to. I drilled the hole in the perch for the ford motor mount to go through.
2. My truck is an 80 and originally came with a 6 cyl. which probably explains why the perches are closer.
2. A 351 cleveland engine is identical to a 351m/400 dimension wise except for the deck height. Motor mount spacing is the same as is front to back length. The bellhousings won't interchange

Good info for any else swapping to Ford engines. I can tell you that an 351W will bolt into a 1979 F150 that came with a 400. So the Motor Mount location on the blocks is identical (like you said). To put a 460 in these Jeeps now, just need the conversion motor mounts.
I knew it would all come together....wish I would have grabbed some Jeep 6cyl motor perches. I like your install better.
I built the motor mount adapter plate in Autocad so if someone wants the dimensions I got em.

With 4" springs and a SOA I have plenty of room for the pan. The motor came straight from a 70 Mustang so that's why the front sump.

I have a 4" body lift which gives me about 2" from the valve covers to the booster. I plan on changing the body lift to 2" so a smaller diameter booster seems inevitible unless I switch back to AMC power.

I think I am going to look into a booster out of a Van, told that they are much smaller diameter. What did you do for a throttle cable?

My bad.. I must be getting old. :( If my FI 300 Ford six swap doesn't work out, I will move up to FI 351W. I'll already have the Ford transmission/TC in place, so that would be the natural progression.
