I know the wags got the drivers side drop axle in the mid 80s. When did the j trucks get it?

I believe J-Trucks, Wags, and Cheros all got the drivers side drop in 1980

Wasn't the standard shift after 1980 a passenger drop?

All SJs from 80 and up were driver's side drop, with the few exceptions possibly right around 1980 when AMC was using up the last of it's stock.

Nope, 80+ standard shift came with an NP208. (such as my 81 with a 258/T176/NP208)

All 80 and up had the driver's side drop unless, as earlier stated, there was some left-over earlier stock being used up during the change-over. It may be that are a few '79s with the driver's drop or perhaps a few '80 trucks with the passenger side drop.
AMC, Kaiser, and International were all known for using up existing stock and switching over to the new designs as the old stuff got used up. Resulted in the occasional oddball truck.
