I have a pair of Dana 44s from a 1979 Waggy sitting here that I am thinking would look really good under this old FJ40. Would that make it a Joyota? A Teep? Or an Abomination?

Anyway, I want to mount them SOA and was looking at the TAD-Perch.

What am I up against attaching these perches to that cast part of the pumpkin? I have a pretty big arc welder and my welding skill is somewhere in between beginner and intermediate.

Is there a way to do it without having to weld to the cast metal? Am I worrying about nothing?

Thanks

for your first question.... the far superiority of the jeep parts would soon take over and thus rule the 'yota parts.... so it would be predominantly jeep and not much toyota. :D

second question... you need nickel rods and a good arc welder and it can be done. a lot of people will tell you to use a torch to "preheat" the cast iron, but this is false. thats about all, and i wouldnt be worried about doing it. be careful that you dont get the arc hotter than need be, the first time i did this i actually melted a bit of the cast away as opposed to welding it. i have been welding for quite a while (8 years) and it can be done and if done properly will be as strong as a regular steel weld:thumbsup:

...what are you waiting for?? go impregnate that yota with some jeep parts and eventually jeeps will dominate the world!! *evil laugh*

The rear fender profile already alienates me from some Land Cruiser types... although I will admit I like the little 3.9 liter inline 6

Thanks, that info helps. One place I talked to had a kit but it incorporated a shackle reversal... which I do not want to do.

The TAD-Perches are looking better and better, especially after following the link to the welding experiment in the thread you provided. I think I'll be okay with the proper rods and a little practice on some donor pieces.

Thanks again

Tony

Nice rig from what I see there, I love FJ's.

The above pretty much covers it.
I'm sure this was in there...

First, the Tad perches are REAL nice....

Second, I guess that welding on that cast is suppose to be a big deal, but I just slapped it on on with my 220V MIG welder... After I attached it, I beat the s**t out of it with a 2.5lb sledge and it didnt budge. Then I wheeled it for abot a year before I swapped axles. When I pulled the axle I gave it a good inspection, did not notice any cracks or damage, beat the s**t out of it again with my 2.5lb sledge, and again, it didnt budge...

Anyway, alot of people (like Tad) know WAY more than me about welding, but that was my experiance....

TAD-Perches and spring plates are in the mail as we speak, and I went and bought some high-nickel rods from the local welding shop ($34.85 + tax per pound, egad)

Hopefully my beads won't look like a bird took a giant dump on the axle.
