I have an '89 GW and I don't know what the proper setting is for the timing. It's not the original engine, the emissions sticker says 19 degrees, the haynes manual says something else and the factory service manual says another thing. Haynes and FSM are both close I think like around 15. Anyway does anyone have any definites.

Go by the emissions sticker, that's your best source of info on your particular vehicle, aside from the Technical Service manual.

Hold on a minute, How mucnh of the engine is not original? When I desmogged (Free state of Kansas) and added a non eger edlebrock, I had to play with the timing to end up about right (12). If the entire engine is say a 79 with all the other stuff, wouldn't you want to use 79 specs??

Hmmmm..... I didn't catch the part about the engine being a replacement.
Knowing that now, I'd stick it a 10*, as a solid base number. and go from there. If the performance seems a little sluggish, then bump it up a couple of degrees, if it pings, then drop it back a couple. My 79 requires 8*, my 87 required 12*. The only reason that your 89 would require 19*, would be that it's a high altitude engine, and is set up for high altitude specs. That's my guess, anyway.
