View Full Version : Fan Pulleys Loose

I started hearing a growling sound - almost like a bearing going out - on my '88 Grand Wagoneer three days ago. The cooling fan and the two pulleys that are between the fan and the block are loose. The fan and the pulleys move up/down about 1/4". How is the shaft that the fan and the pulleys are on - attached to the block? Do I just need to tighten a bolt, or do I indeed have a bearing problem?
Thanks!

waterpump sounds like it's taken a dump on ya. Well, the fan assy. bolts on to the water pump shaft. If those pulley's have that much play in them, its probably time to change out your pump. You lose any water?

Best guess from your description, is the water pump front bearing is toast.

I have been loosing just a little water - maybe a cup per week for the past two months.
How difficult is it to change the water pump? How much time should I allow?
Thanks!
How difficult is it to change the water pump? How much time should I allow?I't not horribly difficult...just time consuming because you have to remove most of the engine accesories to get to it.
never done one on a 360....only a 258.

It does take some time to change, but it sounds like you're on bought time before it breaks and the fan eats the radiator....

Time is in the 2 hr ->4 hr range, depends on how fast you work if you have air, ..
If you let it go to much the impeller will eat into the timing cover and there is the
risk if the bearing going all the way and sending the fan into the rad. So get it done.

I'll agree with Mike on the time. If you pull your radiator out it makes the job MUCH easier though.

Had the same problem on my 79 W/T last week, changed the water pump with rad in place in 3 hours. Fan was wobbling that much it was hitting the air con pump.
