If you are ditching the J20 springs there was somebody looking for 'em, might post in the for sale/trade section....

Like to see how you mount the shocks as mine will be getting relocated also.

I'm that guy or at least one of them (thanks for the heads up Elliot).

If you still have your rear springs (or front and rear) and want to get rid of them let me know!

Thanks but I already have two sets of 4" front springs and a set of blocks. I'm looking to increase the load handling, my old springs have problems with 700-ish lbs of load.

I had 1000 in it and the rear bumper almost hit the ground (the bumper hitch bolt did dig a groove in the sidewalk I pulled off of  ).

I cut mine off and rolled them up the tube. They have not hit anything since.

well got the springs and shackle flip in this weekend.......man were those old springs a ***** to get outhttp://bb.bc4x4.com/images/smilies/frown.gif ..........ive got a few bugs to work out like a nasty pinion angle and i have to move one hanger a bit more forward.Once i get that done and get back from maui i will build a cross member and inboard my shocks...............and the pinion angle isnt a bad as it looks in the pic..........it doesnt flex a good as i hoped but the shock is limiting the droop and i think i need longer shackles

I really like that design for your spring hangers! I'm just about to start making mine & I think I'll use the same basic design. Thanks for the pics & stuff, Good Work!
Did you weld anything on or are you just using the bolts we see?

are the shocks very effective when they are angled/tilted in like that?

82,

I like the way you inboarded the shocks like that. Thats one of the things I have planned for mine.

Earl,
Yes, you get more travel.

Looks really good. Just finished my spring perches for the front end, so I will be following in your footsteps really soon.

I do have a minor critique, and it may be nothing at all, but it looks to me as if when you have the axle stuffed on one side, drooped on the other, The lower shock mounts are mounted in such a way as to cause a bind/breakage issue. There may be enough flex in the shock bushing to prevent it, but it will definately be loading them a lot. Rotating the shock eye 90 degrees complicates mounting the lower shcok mounts a bit, but would eliminate the problem all together.

Like I said, may be nothing, but worth taking a second look at.

Earl,
Yes, you get more travel.
Actually, their "effectiveness" is reduced, but for offroading the reduced ability of the shock to absorb shock is less of a priority than the increased travel that that configuration provides...

In other words, as you tilt the shock, it has less ability to do its job because you are increasing the leverage that the body can use on it. So, the more is tilted, the more you are moving towards the way it would feel with no shock at all.

However, since it is tilted, the shock itself travels less inches per inch of body motion, so a shorter shock can allow more articulation - think about that.

In this particular application, it looks like the shocks are tilted enough that if he were to use that truck for much hauling, it might be a good idea to run two shocks on each side (since each one's effectiveness is reduced by the angle).

The fact that he reports a better ride with the shocks tilted is because it feels softer because the shocks aren't doing as good a job of damping the suspension travel. Put a load in that bed and you will note that the load is what controls the truck (rather than the truck controlling the load.)

Modifications are all about compromise. From the factory, you will find shocks as perpendicular to the axle as possible (for optimal road handling) but us offroaders don't much care about road handling - or at least we are willing to compromise it for increased offroad capability.

very well said dude........pay load went out the window when i did the flip and put in the waggie springs........and as you said the idea behind all of this is to enhance the offroad capabilty............im not overly concerned with on road handling even though its my DD..........

doesnt seem to bind..............it will flex better when i get the longer shackles on .......one shackle is flexed all the way back and the other is straight........ignore my crappy lookin AT's there my DD tires for the welded diff

very well put Jode (for my simple mind anyway)

I love learning:)
