I just finished rebuilding my 79 Cherokee Chief S
Now when drinving it, the tranny blows oil up and out the fill tube. My thought is that since the jeep has been sitting for about 4 years, is that I need to replace the oil filter in the tranny to correct this. It only happens when the tranny is in a drive gear, i.e. it doesn't happen in park or neutral.
Has anyone else seen this, and if so am I right to think changing the filter will help?

Mine did that on the last time out before the winter came. I talked to an repair shop and he said it could be a valve in the transmissin oil pump that was stuck, so that instead of filling the converter it just blows the oil out of the filler tube.
I have not looked into it yet, so I don't know for sure if that is the reason.

Haven't seen this, but I would suspect it's an overfilled tranny - could be due to a REALLY clogged filter, tho. Mine was sitting for almost 2 years before I bought it and the filter wasn't too bad - still drove.

It drives and runs fine, except for the really bad smell inside of burning oil when I am driving it, so it is now parked until I replace the filter. By the way, what type of tranny oil does it take, Dexron. I am unsure because it is a Q-trac and I do not know if that makes a difference.

if the center support bolt is broken/missing it will blow the fluid out the dip stick tube also if there is a blown clutch pack lip seal in the rear clutch pack it will also do the same thing

Check the trany vent, it is on the passenger side near the top were the bell housing meets the body of the trans (above the fluid lines). The trans can blow fluid if the vent is clogged.

The tranny was supposed to be newly rebuilt when I bought it five years ago, but I just got around to getting it running now, Where do I find the center support bolt, I know I double checked all the Bell Housing bolts, and the two bolts from the tranny to the cross member, but I have no idea about the center bolt?
