the subject is an '86 g.w., all stock. the plan is to eventually put a 4" lift with 31's. lots, and i mean LOTS, of slop in the steering. i've read about the s10 steering box install, and i don't rememeber it being there before, it prob was i just missed it, but then read the rebuild write-up in the tech library. can anyone compare the two? am i correct that with the s10 box steering is a bit tighter? or was it not as tight??? i don't remember off the top of my head. i haven't checked prices on an s10 box but the rebuild sure is cheap, as in not expensive, and seems more of a headache, but if it works and the rebuild is good that's fine. WHAT SHOULD I DO?!?!?:banghead::banghead::banghead:
thanks y'all

We just installed a reman steering box in ours. Got a core charge for the old one and all tolled we're out $128.95. To me it was well worth it.

I just hosed my old box trying to tap the box for hydro steer. I pulled the worm gear completely out on accident... WHOOPS. Anyways, I got a used box out of another FSJ for $100.

dont want to hijack your thread but is the s10 box more powerful than the stock wag box? In other words, will it turn 33's easily off-road? If so then i may do that, mine is leaking like crazy

i dunno about an s10 but a j20 steering box has a larger bore or something to that effect that gives it a little bit more power over a regular j10,cherokee,waggy steering box.

hey all thanks for the input. i don't mind steering that is a little forgiving, for twitchy i'll drive the cj or ride my bicycle so i guess i should stay with the oem box. hey janie, where did you get your reman? i live right down 380 in providence, if ya' got it local i'd love to be able to drive and get one.

Before you do anything... have you already tried tightening the steering box that you have? There is a nut on the top center of the steering unit. IIRC turn it clockwise to tighten the gears up and possibly get rid of some of the slop in your steering.

yea its worth a shot, just be careful not to overtighten it. If you do that then whenever you turn, the wheels will not realign themselves like they should, doesnt hurt anything... its jsut annoying sometimes
