I have researched this with the search feature, but am now more confused. (doesnt take much). Anyway I have 2.73 gears and am going to do a bj's 4in lift soon and wanted to run 32x11.5's. I will add a 2in body lift in the spring to get somemore clearance. I am also installing a crate motor with a rv cam and a new intake (non egr) with a new 4 barrel. Will this set up work? I will try to change the gears to 3.73's within 6 to 8 mo. but how will it do on the 2.73's? It will be all road driving till the gears get changed with no towing, the gear calculator said with that set up I will run around 2000 rpm @ 65mph. I am wondering with the 4 barrel and cam if it will help with such high gears? I just dont want to put to much lug on anything. Thanks

With 2.73 gears and 32" tires it's gonna be a dog alright. My calculations figuring 32's are really 31's in real life measurements you'll be turning about 1925rpm at 65mph. You're right you won't be doing any towing. smile.gif
Putting a 4v carb etc won't change your hwy rpm's any. It will run a bit better when the tranny kicks down to pass etc but in high gear at a 1:1 ratio the carb won't mean a thing...rpms will still be the same. You'll just have to live with it being a slug till you can get new axle gears. There's a lot of poseur rigs out there living with 2.73 gears and 33's so it's bearable I guess. I just hope you're a flatlander. ;)

Well, I'm running around on the stock engine, 2.73s in the axles and 31" tires. It's a little sluggish but it's fine. I've got a set of axles with 3.73s sitting in my driveway getting ready for the swap, so I'd say you're on the right track smile.gif Since you're not doing any towing and you'll have a little stronger engine I'd say you'll be fine on the 2.73s and 32" tires until you get the 3.73s in 6 months.

i ran 38's w/ 3.54's for a while. it was slugish but it got the job done. you should be fine w/ what u got. are u putting a crate 360 in or someother crate motor?

I'm running 31's and 2.72 gears and it's not that bad, it certainly would be tolerable for 6 months or so. The only real problem I noticed was going up some steep grades going to northern Az, my Grand would want to kick down into 2nd gear to maintain about 65 mph because I wasn't turning enough rpms at that speed in 3rd gear to make power.

I've got BJ's 4" system, 32x11.50s (not body lift but 1.25" cut from rear fenders) and 3.73 gears. The motor has 4,000 miles on it, an RV cam and stock 2 bbl carb

I wouldn't describe my Jeep as quick off the line by any stretch. it does great past 10 mph.

At 60 mph, I'm in the 2300 RPM area... I think, i'll have to look.

Since you're changing gears anyway, why not go to 4.10s? You want to be in the 3000rpms at 80mph range when you do your calculations...
