All you driveline experts, just rebuilt the AM20 rear with detroit. Question has come up, do I pack the outer bearings and lube the hell out of the seal? or is the gear oil in the diff supposed to get slung out there to do that for me? Havn't put the axle back up under the truck yet so want to make sure I get this right. Got told by two different mechanics two different things, one said pack, the other said let the gear oil do it. I'm inclined to maybe pack with vaseline so i don't score anything until the lube gets out there, my understanding is that the vaseline will dissolve in the gear oil as it does in the engine oil.
Let me know, want to button this thing back up and get started on the front 44.

If you have two seals (an inner and an outer) you need to pack the bearing with grease. Or remove the inner seal and let the gear oil do the job. I have always removed the inner seal.
