So I have been having this noise from the front end for a while. I initially thought it was definitely in the differiential after reading some doomsday sounding posts on here. But now I am thinking it could be the wheel bearing. I replaced one cause it looked bad just after I bought the truck, but not the other. What does a wheel bearing sound like when it goes? And to check, I jack the truck up and try to move the wheel or what? It is a front wheel.

Thanks

Daniel

When I've had wheel bearings go bad, I got more of a crackling or crunching sound... they were pretty much toast by that point (roof-less CJ with built 360, headers/side exit exhaust and 35" Bogger - I only heard the really bad things).

Sounds like the solution is to do the wheel bearings - if that's it, great. If not, you've not lost a thing, they probably need it anyway.

When my front spring broke and sent me for a loop. The right front wheel took a big hit.

It would make a a snapping sound at a certin speed after that. And it was lowder going in a straight line then going around a turn.

Pulled it apart and sure enofe bearing were junk.

I had the advantage of knowing the thing took a hit. So I only needed to put 2 and 2 together.

I hope this helps.

Big Y, when my wheel bearing was in its death throes it made a howling/rumbling sound that quite possibly could be an extreme whirring sound. You could jack the offending wheel up and try to wiggle it. If the bearing is going out, it will probably have some slop in it. You could always pop the hub off and check the bearing for any rough spots and/or wear on the races. You have 2 bearings in each hub so check them both. Since you have it apart wheel bearings are fairly cheep and hub seals run me about 10$ at NAPA for my J-4800 so you might as well get new ones, pack-em, and throw em in. That way you can be sure that if the noise continues it isn't the wheel bearings and you know that your wheel bearings will be good for a long time to come.

Good luck
