1/2/07 UPDATE

July 11, 12 & 13 - Wednesday, Thursday and Friday for trail runs. Be in Ouray by Tuesday to catch runs beginning Wednesday. This will work best for folks with kids in school. We are still on for folks dropping in our home in Mancos, CO on July 9 & 10 with at least one local Mancos trail ride on Monday the 9th.

NOTE: There is at least one requirement we make for those who join us for the trail rides. You must have a low range transfer case on your vehicle. We take absolutely no responsibility for anyone who ventures to the mountain trails without a low range transfer case in their vehicle.

For 2007, we invade the San Juan Mountains with our FSJs all over again! Please plan to be in Ouray by Tuesday evening (July 10). We will be trail riding Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. There is the option stay another day and get together for a ride on Saturday as well. The socially acceptable FSJ place to camp is at the Ouray KOA. All sites are now open to all who call. Krista and I have site 47A reserved again this year. We are also holding site 47D in our name . 47D is the social gathering place for camp fire meetings. Anyone who wants 47D can contact us.

Since we are not sure how long everyone might be able to stay, be sure and let KOA know which day you plan to depart. It is pretty laid back in the back by the aspens and only a short walk to the bathroom and showers. You are responsible to get and pay for your sites if you stay at the KOA or anywhere else. The best bet is to determine if you can make it to the 2007 Ouray FSJ Invasion and reserve early. Please remember: if you cancel less than 48 hours before your arrival date, you pay Dave for at least two nights any way. There is a change in reservations for 2007. They will charge your credit card for 1 night for each reservation you make. You bill with KOA is your responsibility. Here is the KOA web site: OURAY KOA (http://www.rver.com/parkdetail.asp?parkid=1) You can reserve a site by the Internet HERE (http://www.koa.com/where/co/06158/index.htm), by email to Dave (koaouray1@mindspring.com) or call 1-800-KOA-8026. Dave and Deborah spend the winter in Florida and will be leaving Ouray by the end of October until next Spring. They can take your reservations from where ever they are, but it may take a couple to a few days to make your connection once he has left for Florida. Please be patient. Reserved sites are shown with an asterisk on the map below.

Here is a link to other lodging options (http://www.cfsja.org/2002/planner/lodging.html). Note: Discounts mentioned at that link only applied to the 2002 Ouray FSJ Invasion.

:( Yep, I have the problem/ complaint that I won't be there. Has to be the week before!!! I vote for July 11,12,13. But I know that it can't be planned to fit everyone's schedule... and we will not likely be driving an FSJ this time, either (so why am I on this site, you ask??). So to be fair, it's not up to me. Just wanted to express my unhappiness with not being able to go, I really had a good time this year. Great people, great scenery, what more could you ask for? Maybe in 2008? I vote to keep it in Ouray, always. Unless someone shows me prettier pictures than the ones I have... and a better time than I had, too! How bout Hawaii wheelin'??? Sure, we can drive there!

I think we could be talked into the week before. Ralph was interested in the week before. The floor is open for discussion on the week before. Did I say we could manage the week before? :D

Flint, will there be any single women around the stables to hang my hat on? I could use a human :D female co-pilot this year in and around Colorado. I seem to be in a better mood driving on those long, dusty, bumpy Colorado roads. Come on, help a fellow Texan out!!!

See you in Mancos in '07:drivin:

I wouldn't mind it being a week earlier like 2 years ago. Emily started school the day after we got back this year.
But as long as it is NO LATER than those dates I will be there.
Already looking forward to it again my friends.

Given enough advance warning I will make it any time in July. Flint, I would love to show up a day or two early and hang at the place with ya. Last years trip seemed too short.

So, I wonder if we move this back to July 11-13 if the newlyweds would show up again? ;) That would be cool. I also hear your concerns Ralph. The reason we moved it back a week this last summer (yes, it is now Autumn) is because some passes were still closed the second week of July in 05.

<here I start wandering around a bit>
SJ has made a good point in another thread that we do this during the monsoon season and subsequently get rained on and a few lightning bolts thrown at us, not to mention roads washing out like coming down off Imogene this year. Really, the end of August and early September is nice for mountain rides here. But not practical for families with kids that would be travelling a day or more to get here.

The big Invasion in 02 was held the 2nd week of August. The recon missions in 00 and 01 were held over Labor Day. I think the 99 recon was too. The weather then was warm and dry. Some folks saw snow flurries on Imogene in 01. Hard to guage all this with changing weather patterns because we were in serious drought conditions 00 through 02. The weather on those trips was uneventful and mostly dry. Since 02, we have been doing this the 2nd or 3rd week of July so folks with school aged kids could make the trip. In 03 we had a little more moisture and better display of flowers. For 04, 05 and 06, we have had fair amount of rain during the Invasion. Who knows what next year will be like?

I think we need to seriously consider getting on the trails earlier in the day to avoid bad weather like this year. We typically shoot the bull and mess around until 10 or 11 to hit the trails. I am not pointing fingers because I am guilty too. The monsoon rains start building after noon and we get caught in the squalls. We could just as easily hit the road at 8 and be off most the trails by 2 or 3. Then we can do socializing in the afternoons and brag about what we did or broke that day. Just a thought...
<end the wandering>

So, what say ye on July 11-13 for 07?

ColeTrickle

Kenny, hon..... seems to me you got to make it across the colorado state line before you can get a "co-pilot".

Ummm...I've made it across the line a few times. I just like to have a different co-pilot for different area codes, city limits, zip codes, etc.
I can keep them straight that way.;)

On a serious note, I prefer the way we had it in '02. I don't like the rain and I hate sitting on top of the mountain with lightning all around. Those monsson rains in '04 totally sucked! How long did we have to wait that year for the rains to end and get back on the trail?

How about a poll to see how many families are "all in" this early in the game. That will give us some understanding on "why" where starting so early....Again, didn't I mention the rain sucks on top of the mountain?

fulsizjeep

OK - closing polls early. Now. I am setting the date so we can just get on with it.

July 11, 12 & 13 - Wednesday, Thursday and Friday for trail runs. Be in Ouray by Tuesday to catch runs beginning Wednesday. This will work best for folks with kids in school. We are still on for folks dropping in here July 9 & 10 with at least one local Mancos trail ride on Monday the 9th.

FWIW, my company's slow time is during the entire summer. So as long as I know when... the time doesn't matter to me. I like the rain.. I like the lightning... I like the thunder... I like the sunshine and I love FSJ's!

EDIT: Sorry I missed the poll... my vote would have been for "EITHER, I AM GOING"

That's the week me and the boys take our annual motorcycle trip. But since I'm the instigator of that activity, I guess I'll have to change it to a couple of weeks later.

I also will be doing Moab with whichever FSJers are going. Preferably a week or two after the EJS. I was there for that this year and there's just too much trail traffic. Seeing all the cool Jeeps around town isn't enough to outweigh the inability to do the trails you want.

Maybe we need to get a seperate thread going for the Moab trip. Sounds like Matt wants to go 2 weeks after EJS. Doesn't matter to me either way. I know that Colin wants to go (with us this year!), you, Matt, Shimniok, myself... meet Flinty out there... We could crowd up all the trails we want to with FSJ's!

I will start a thread under "EVENTS" and PM Colin and let him know that I have posted it so he is in the loop. I will edit this post with the link to the Moab thread in case any utahun's, arizonan's, new mexican's, etc, want to join in.

I am definately going to both Ouray and Moab this coming summer. I can't wait!

Our trip itinerary (vague at this point) should put us in Mancos for Monday night and we can head to Ouray with the rest of the clan on Tuesday. We will be leaving Glacier on Sunday... two long driving days should do it... we haven't planned the exact route yet but I believe it includes Hwy 666.

Michael wants to go a week after EJS, which ends on Easter Sunday April 8, 2007 I presume. So I guess that would mean we'd head out there on Sunday the 15th or Monday the 16th and stay until we all break or are broke. I don't really want to go to Moab in the summer. My A/C works okay on the road, but not so great on the trail...

UGGGG!!!!! Why do I need to live 1886 miles away! I figure at 2.25 per gallon and 10 miles per gallon that would cost me about 900.00 for gas alone just to get to Ouray and back, and then food, gas while in Ouray, lodging, plus my time (29.7 hours) to get there - according to MapQuest. Middletown, PA 17057 to Ouray, CO.
Maybe some year!

The rule is two tents and vehicles per site. Altho we've seen that stretched in the past. I think we had 3 tents/vehicles in the G spot one year. I'd suggest getting the tent sites farthest back if folks are going to share. Out of site, out of mind!

Don the problem with buying from gas stations is they not only charge you road tax but they also charge you sales tax!! The first year I went to Ouray I paid 10 cents more per gallon than you folks who were running gasoline. This last year since I was able to bring my own bulk with me I only paid $1.80 per gallon and, here latly I have paid as low as$1.65!

I know BethAnn's been posting on our behalf, but I want to say I'm already excited about next year. I've been busy wrenching on the Explorer lately (and so has my better half). Here's a pic of it, now with 33s. We also put a Lock Right in the rear axle.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v490/SVO42/Fall%20Crawl%202006/33sonaddinggearoil.jpg

Our local club's big even was a couple of weeks ago, and I'm almost done with the repairs from it. :o Here's the Forum with everyone's pics, if you're interested: http://www.gilmoremotors.com/discus/viewforum.php?f=11 . There was a scary old Power Wagon that showed up that no one was expecting.

The Exploder no longer has the Wag's tires, but after my recent trials and tribulations wrenching on the Ford TTB axle, I'm seriously considering a solid axle swap. Interestingly enough, FSJ parts are high on the consideration list! I'll most likely use a baby Jeep Dana 30, but I'm also looking at Dana 44s, but the HPs are pretty expensive. However, a LP 44 from a FSJ has just about the right width, hmm.... Even if I use a 30, I'll most likely use FSJ front leaf springs. One other Explorer I know of used them and they worked like a charm. :fsj:

So, we probably won't make it out in a FSJ again, but we'll probably have some parts again if everything goes well. I had a great time this year and look forward to next!

Nice pics. The first one is a good example of soil erosion. It goes from the trail to Brutus and is redeposited wherever the rust under it falls off. Might need a government-funded study to determine the environmental effects of that.

I'd use a Dana 44 LP (I'm a cheapskate,) as long as the front driveshaft will clear everything. It'll definitely handle differently on the road. I assume it'll drive less like a grocery-getter and more like a truck.

I haven't talked to Jason about sharing a campsite yet. If he's made other arrangements I'd be willing to share ours (if I can get Woman to go) with you guys. One consideration: My wife says my snoring is...umm...discomforting at times, and our tent offers no soundproofing.

I suppose there won't be as much noise from your tent this year seeing as it's not the honeymoon this time.

This is just rumor mill, but I heard they broke all their toys before they could get to Ouray. I haven't seen this latest JP. I usually nab one at Walmart and leave it in the can where it belongs. ;)

I don't mind the headlights, whether they be round, rectangular, perky, saggy etc. Not too fond of those pancake/plumb bobs though. :D

It's the grille itself, the massive expanse of fake (peeling) chrome clear up into the raised middle of that gorgeous hood. I know, the latest grilles also have fake chrome up there, but the black inserts break up the chrome and make it look a lot tougher. All that gaudy chrome belongs on a Caddy. But if you like it, enjoy. I won't ridicule you unless I happen to be present.

I would like to go to Ouray with you guys if you'll let me. I sold my J10, but my YJ is half Wagoneer. I would tow it up with my truck and then trail ride with the YJ. I've been looking at pics of your trips for a while and decided I'd like to check it out. I normally have Fri-Sun off each week, so if I take off Mon-Thur, then I'll have off 10 days and only burn 40hrs of vacation. It's like taking a gentle country gravel road to your Grandma's house. Then again there is that obstacle:eek:  .. Most of what I saw( when my eyes were open) were gravel roads. There were some serious obstacles to clear but these guys know which trails' needs are. I believe Alan and Pams waggy was about all stock and they did alot of wheeling. I don't remember seeing them up on Imogene Pass, that trail would require some lift or else body damage is emminent. I do believe UglyJeepling's Chero was stock height and he done that trail. I just can't get that Rock outcropping, near the top, out of my mind:eek: . I was hitching a ride in a J20 with a massive lift, tires and a great driver. I had a blast climbing that rock near the top of Imogene, HOOT! :bluelaugh: Steep incline? Check. Dumbasses parking in the two paths around it? Check. Line picked. Thankful for the Exploder's EFI. Open diffs = balls out = hang on, BethAnn! I put it in gear, gave it some revs, dropped the clutch and floored it! :drivin: Four liters of screaming Ford fury bouncing up that rock was great. That was the most fun I had on an obstacle.

Like everyone has said, though, a stock vehicle is fine for nearly everything out there. Just remember to have good brakes, a low range, and be prepared for vapor lock if you're carbed. Fix every single little vacuum leak before you go.

Uglyjeepling has a small lift IIRC. 2" or 3" with 33's or 35" tires. KennyH had the most stock rig up there and he even did the hardest obstacle on Poughkeepsie... with a tug. I would have been able to make it with a locker or two! I had to get tugg'd up.

Not true. There may be a few washes that you might need a tug through but not many. Of course if the whole trail washes out like last year, nobody's getting through - big lift and tires or not. Those trails are maintained by heavy equipment all summer when necessary. Imogene's pucker factor is the elevation and vertigo.

So besides Poughkeepsie can pretty much all the trails be done with a mostly stock FSJ? If I can make it out I sooo want to do Imogene but I hear talk lift& big tires are a necessity, is this true?

I am sure that a stock rig could do Imogene. The washouts weren't really that bad looking back on it. Did you see the picture that Ralph (I think?) took of the toyota mini van going up Imogene last year?

I hope all that are attending have a wonderful time. Ouray is our backyard and our playground. If any of you run Black Bear this year, please note the sponsorship sign at the begining of the trail and the repair work we've done throughout the trail. As president of the Creeper Jeepers Gang of Durango, I offer any needed assistance to anybody that has any breakages or is in need of emergency parts. My club has a line on several FSJ's and I am sure we could get just about anything to you if needed. Our club website is http://www.creeperjeepers.org/home.html and I will post some contact numbers as we get closer to July. Perhaps, I might even join you on a trail or two!

Okay, we are in too!

I just reserved two water/electic spots. One for Derek and I, the other one for Jerry. It's not right with the rest of the club but we will be close enough to wander over too.

Derek is bringing Dinky again. He is almost at 200 pounds!

We will arrive Tuesday.

We are going to caravan. The plan is to leave Monday late morning or early afternoon and stop to camp/sleep on the way up. Not sure where yet or if we will just 'wing' it. Anyone stay at the KOA in Holbrook? Let me know if you want to hook up with the caravan. We won't be making any record time since we are pulling trailers.

I will bring the Boa.

Anyone with a bigger spot mind if we park a truck in their spot? We might be tight on room with 3 jeeps, 1 truck and three trailers.

There was lots of room back in the corner last year. Seems like there was even a ghost site in front of the one I got this year. I'd offer you mine but may be having company with me as well. But like I said there was lots of space in the back,I'm sure we can find room.

My opinion is that Black Bear, then Imogene back to Ouray is a nice day-trip, early back to camp. That was our plan last year but the weather changed it for us.

I'm planning on that trip one day, and on another the Alpine Loop from Ouray to Lake City (lunch at Poker Alice's) and back to Ouray. I don't know what else I'm doing. It depends on who's going where, I guess.

Ryan - That is exactly what everyone looked like the morning after Agave, before we ran up to Imogene and almost died!

You all are the greatest. We always like to visit the dogs up there. I guess I have another reason to get to Yankee Boy Basin this year with a hand full of my mother's ashes.

Sounds like a plan Flint!

It doesn't take much to convince me (or my girlfriend) to go to Colorado.

Site 52A for those of you keeping score at home.

Hari and I got it arranged that I can take his site....it's either 43 or 44. I'll probably call this week and verify. I'll be getting there Tuesday and staying definitely through Saturday with the option of leaving Sunday.

Found rear axle issues yesterday; all pretty easy but time consuming, when I could be working on getting that 401 in and running! It'll be a mad race to giterdun now......

Lord willin' and the creek don't rise, I'll be in Ouray this year for sure! May only be with the 360 though.

Who's going out Tuesday from the Front Range and wants to caravan? Not too soon to start planning.....

Ken and I might be heading through Springs on Tuesday. We took the route south of Springs up through Salida, to Montrose and then down. I really liked it better than I70.

I will have to see how much I can get done on Brutus to see if I can still go as planned.

I am moving to 47c w/ RiverRat and SVO42. I am keeping my site untill someone from our group claims it, this keeps FSJ's together. So if anyone wants to move into a nice spot PM me. Thanks.

Site 48 (Ugly's old site) needs to be picked up. Having some non-FSJ types in the middle would be bad.

Ideally, someone in the sites up around the 50s or 44/45 would want to move in a little closer? :dancingbanana:

Excellent Mark! Go for what is needed and not what is 'planned'. The Ouray trails are not super technical and don't require a 'built rig'. I did them with 31" tires and a 4" lift with no problem. Focus on GOOD BRAKES and a good running engine. Make sure your hi/low transfer case is working. Some of the trails are 'low gear needed'. Don't worry about lockers or winches or that kinda stuff. You won't get stuck and if you do, there will be help near by.

Looking forward to meeting ya!

NEED to do rear brakes, right rear bearing/seal, like to repack front bearings (kind of a need; it's been a while) and may replace front rotors while I've got it apart. Want to get the 401 (:D ) in and running before then, but will settle for a tune-up with plugs, wires, maybe cap/rotor too. I may just rebuild the carb, or at least bring a kit since I don't have a spare.

Already have the lift and tires, I'll run open this year yet since I don't have the funds for a locker, low range is golden, but overhead lights would be REAL nice! I'm not concerned with what trails I can/can't make; I've tackled some decent ones as she sits and did fine. I know Ouray is generally milder anyway. Just mainly going for the scenery, company and MANY FSJ's! :fsj:

Still need to look at fluids and determine what needs changed. I'm looking at Memorial Day weekend for a major wrenching weekend, to maybe include a motor swap! :drivin:

New from Illinois.. Considering stopping by and checking out 07 FSJ Invasion on way to Lake Powell family trip in July... have ordered 6" BJ lift and plan to add Dozer II bumper and 12 k winch to our 79 Wagoneer , bought battery, started, took her out of barn ( stored for 3 years ), drove to town, topped off gas tank added PS fluid ( 2 pints ) and dropped off at Stearns Off Road in Energy Illinois , I am familiar with West Creek Co area ...use to have cabin before Haymen Fire ... now we have charcoal acreage bordering Pike National Forest..,. Still bums us out to think about it.. anyway , recently joined Southern Illinois Jeep Association ( sija.org ) attended our club Jeep Jam in Hannibal, MO decided it is time to knock the dust off wagon and get back on the road... let me know status of space availability for camping and trail rides... If I can pull this off I plan to trailer ...want to view pics of our jeep rigs go to http://PLunsford.photosite.com/
PS : I am very interested in XL black tshirt

peluns - welcome to the madness of FSJville!

Hope you can join in on the fun in Ouray! The trails are not technically difficult save Poughkeepsie and that is one hump of a climb on one obstacle. The major prep is for altitude because we get up there. Both for the Jeep and physically for you and your passengers. But it is good fun.

The reservations for KOA are handled through the KOA itself. We get them to hold some sights for us back in the Aspen area of the park. We can kind of isolate any late night chatter to the back corner most the time. So, contact Dave at the KOA and see about somewhere back around 52 or 53 for the back row or 42 or 43 if you want to tent camp and be in the vacinity of most of us. If you can't get in there, there are plenty of nice spots in the park. Cabins too. The front area next to the lake is actually not bad around E, F or G for other tent options. Dave can fix you up. Tell him you are with the Full Size Jeep group.

The unofficial website for Ouray FSJ Invasion is:
http://frontier.net/~mystkblu/07ouray

Have safe travels!

You can put trailers on some of the tent sites depending on the size of your trailer. There are no hook ups. Ask Dave if you have any questions.

Had chinese for dinner last night and received an appropriate fortune in my cookie:
http://i145.photobucket.com/albums/r206/jaydub46and2/misc/2007-05-12-Fortune.jpg

While the Great Basin isn't the sandiest (is that even a word?) desert around, there is still plenty of sand.

The first two "lucky" numbers on the back are 5 (the day I'm leaving Sacramento) and 10 (the first day in Ouray).

This is kind of freaky here, with the fortune and dates.
Back in 2003 my vacation schedule was this:
Dec 5th, leave KY with J20 and trailer.
Drive to San Fransisco to pick up Cherokee.(dropped off rolling MG frame)
Depart Dec 10th and head back home.
I found crossing Desert to be an experience, both ways. Can't wait to do it again. Can't wait to do it again!!!:drivin: :fsj:

On a side note, how much gas do you guys usually burn up thru-out the event? Tank a day or much less?

Yeah, give or take. The black bear run ended up in Teluride and then a trip back on the highway so I used up a little more that day. I gassed up every day but that's just me.
