View Full Version : Emissions, to test or not to test...

Well, I have changed oil, replaced Plugs, wires, cap, rotor and air filter. I didn't screw with the carb, because I couldn't get a rebuild kit at the places I tried. I've spent about $60 of the 200 required for a waiver. Should I try to get it tested today on that off chance that this brought my HC score down to a reasonable level(it was 1940 and pass was 600) or should I take it to one of their approved nazi shop, and have them do ~$150 worht of time on it to meet the waiver req.? The only thing I risk in testing it again is that every time I drive it to the center, it is a possible ticket due to no plates. My temp tag expired while I was replacing the unforseen QT seal leak. I don't know how understanding the police will be if they pull me over to or from the testing center. What do you guys think?

I don't know 'bout MO, but here in Texas you don't get penalized if your car was in the shop. Of course it's all up to someone else like a cop or a judge.... and you have to prove your car was out of service.

i know this is illegal, but, i just put on plates from another vehicle to get me to the emissions place and back home.
also, i would try chemicals for your gas tank as well.

I'm gonna throw some heet in it before taking it. Someone told me this worked on a car they had. As to the other plates, my other cars(Wrangler and Miata) have car plates. Truck plates end with a number. Car plates end with a letter. I am thinking of going this way though on the chance that the cop would just notice the plate and not look at the number.

brad,
i did the same with the plates. took them off my blazer onto the j10. they weren't truck plates. but, they got me there and back.
most of the deputy sheriffs in jefferson county are pretty understanding guys. it's the troopers who don't give any breaks.
you gotta do what ya gotta do.

Call and make an appointment at the testing place. That way, you could maybe slide if they pull you over. The plate switching would only guarantee an additional ticket should you get pulled over. They might even tow your rig because of it.

I had to go get a temporary tag at lunch today so I could drive my new 87 to the deq tonight. I got it in Washington so they had to take the plates off of it that expire in april 2005. That sucked.
$20 poorer just to be able to drive to the tester station.
But get this. We have a tv here at work and I saw a news story that shows how typical gov't. is.
guy go's to deq:fails
go's to mechanic: tests great
go's to the second deq: passes
go's to a third deq: passes
go's back to first deq: fails
Show's them the three print out's from his mechanic and the two deq's and the next thing you have is a news story pissin off the
Oregonians.

You should check your local laws before you go swapping plates. I don't know what the law is in Illinois, but when I used to live in Florida, I found out using the "improper tag" from another vehicle was a CRIMINAL offense, not a traffic ticket. You go to criminal court, not traffic court. No es bueno. I'd take your chances with the expired temp tag and your sob story...
