i have a ford 460 with the stock exhaust manifold feeding to pipes to a single muffler. is this a cheap system? does it create a lot of back pressure?

A 460 is a bigger engine, it really likes to breath. Our 77 F150 trailor Special came factory ith dual exhaust. It has each manifold go into a single muffler, then dual outlets like you explain. Its still a dual exhaust setup, the muffler acts as a cross over basically. Our 460 has a RV cam, carb, bored over, and few other things, and will pull anything up any hill as fast as you want it to. So I say it works just fine.
