I have just finished all (well almost all) of the mechanical on my restoration job. I took the truck out for it's first real test drive today. Some timing problems and carb adjustments yet to do but...... I turned on my heater and found a few problems.

Since my unit has been sitting for about 4 years at my farm, it seems the mice have made a home somewhere. It totally reaks!!! When I hit a bump with the defrost on some mice crap and stuffing flew out of the front defrost vents. I bet they have the heater box full of stuff. My question is, how hard is it to pull the heater box under the dash off and clean it out. Where does one start to dismantle things and what kind of problems can I expect to run into.

There is something else that I noticed, the heater controls (push buttons) will not go into "heat" possition or "off". Could these be related? Maybe if the thing is full of crap, the valve cannot switch them over????

One last problem (for now). My wipers will not return to down position. They work fine, but when you turn the switch off they stop where ever they are on the stroke. Any ideas?

Please help out as the smell is killing me!!
Maybe if I came back as a cat in the next life I would like it.

To take off the heater box, there are nuts to remove in the engine bay (easy), and some under the dash (harder), if you have AC you'll need to drop it for access. You can clean out the 'heat' vents from there. The defrost vents are accessed by removing the glove box.
As for the controls, I would suggest pulling the instrument cluster. You can then clean/lube the switches, replace vac hoses (also alot easier with AC and glovebox removed), and whatever else. When I did this I took the opportunity to totally clean the gauge faces and lenses, and paint the needles. This is one of those things that, for me, revealed lots of other piddly things to do.
