View Full Version : 6.2 Swap Info (Starters / Flexplates / Flywheels)

Any folks considering a 6.2 swap into their FSJ may find this information worthwhile.

GM used a 12-14 tooth pitch for the flexplate / flywheel ring gear, and starter drive on MOST applications. (SBC, BBC, 6'es, ETC)
HOWEVER, the 6.2 / 6.5 (and 5.7, for the niche freaks out there) used 10-pitch gear teeth. The flexplate, while nearly the same diameter as a 168-tooth 'normal' Chevy ring gear, is ACTUALLY 139 teeth. If you are using an engine / transmission / starter / flywheel (flexplate) that all came together this is a non-issue,

BUT if you had a complete 465 / 208 setup out of a gas truck and wanted to put it behind the 6.2 Diesel, you need to change the ring gear at the same time you are getting the flywheel match-balanced to the 6.2 flexplate. This little issue kept me from being able to attend the Tuttle Creek get-together this weekend.

Hope some may find it helpful

the good news is that the correct, 139-tooth, 10-pitch flywheel ring gear is under 40 bucks, and WILL fit the regular gasser flywheel.

verified tonight, (actually R+R'ed t-case and trans and changed ring gear in 2-1/2 hr, hoist up to hoist down.)

good info dave.

i thot id also point out that the correct flywheel can be purchased at advance for $36.99+a $79.99 core if you dont have an old one.

prolly close in cost once you figure in resurfacing,re balancing, and changing the ring gear.

i looked it up for an 85 c30 with a 6.2 and came up with part#6532 for the above costs.
