Alright I'm new to this forum but member to others but they are full of people with new jeeps and they don't know a **** thing. So I figure go to the pro's right...well anyway I just came across a Jeep 327 dirt cheap and had to grab it well it came out of a J-10 or J-100 this kid did not know
he did not even know the year of the motor but I am guessing it has to be a 65-68 so I need to find a web page or someone with info on this motor I have never messed with this one before. The motor runs so they say but I need to get headers and I want to upgrade it to a 4brl carb and intake and all that good stuff before I drop it into a CJ5
can anyone tell me where to find the casting number on the block to look it up and a web page to find info and to get parts
Thanks
Good motor for sure but parts are real hard to find and expensive when(if) you do. Good luck finding stock parts for it let alone a 4v intake and headers for it. :) I'd use it as is or forget it. Prolly end up to be the most expensive cheap motor you ever had.
The eng code is on a tag on the alternator bracket. The bottom line is the build date:
1st digit is year: 7=1965, 8=1966 etc. 2nd and 3rd is the year, 4th is the CR: E=8.7, F=9.7 the 5th and 6th is the day built.

I have two, one that runs and one for a backup.
Gasket kits are $125
4 barrel intakes are the holy grail. I have one..not for sale
used a Holley 4150 3405 I think for the 4b-carb..one I was just bidding on went for $40
Unless you have alot of extra $, want a 650lb motor in a cj, and enjoy finding parts that don't exist, go for it! Very torquey motor.
When looking for parts also keep in mind that they used them in AMC Ambassodors, Rebels, Marlins..and listed as Gray Marine engines for boats.
theres a big 327 section on FSJNETWORK.COM
ps..they have nothing in common with chevy 327s..anyone that says or thinks so should find another hobby.

ok I checked it out and it has 806e30
so 1966 june 8.7 30th
so let me ask you guys this they told me the motor ran and everything is there except the exhuast manifolds...am I going to be able to find parts for this or is it more trouble then its worth?? all I am looking to do is go with a 4brl intake and carb and a set of headers, it has a 2brl intake and looks like a motorcraft carb, would it be beter to stick with that??
Above in Gambler68's reply where he mentioned "4 barrel intakes are the holy grail. I have one..not for sale" That means good luck finding one. It's a real in demand item for the Rambler/AMC car guys. Even if you do find one and the owner knows what he has it'll be $$$. The 4v on 327's only came on one model of the FSJ's and that was the Super Wagoneer which is probably the rarest FSJ this side of the Panel Delivery model.
You might find a set of used stock exhaust manifolds from someone that's swapped the 327 out for something else in his FSJ.

It'd have tons of power in a CJ, but..when it breaks down you better have a tow truck handy. I'd suggest that unless you're not a complete old school AMC nut, and don't need bragging rights, go with a 360-401.(get the 401, also a rare AMC engine but parts interchange with 304/360) You could try selling it out there, there was just a guy in cali here looking for one. Probally get a quicker bite on Rambler/AMC boards (or any of the other cars I listed above).
Don't get me wrong, I love my 327 in my 68 Gladiator, it roars like a jet and is pretty fast, but 5-10mpg SUCKS. And it doesnt get any better than that.

The 327 makes an excellent CJ motor, just heavy as stated. PM me, I have exhaust maniforlds.

Also, did you realize the driver side manifold is a front dump?

If you really want headers, they would have to be custom built for a Rambler 327.
For FSJs equipped with 327 from the Kaiser factory, the driver side exhaust manifold is a passenger side manifold on the drivers side of the engine and does dump out towards the front (with wrap around the front of the motor and Y pipe on passenger side of engine). So what I am saying is the FSJs that got the 327 used 2 RH or Passenger Side exhaust manifolds used on the Rambler cars.
It is possible to have two exhaust manifolds dump at the rear however. If you want the exhaust to come out at the back of the engine on the LH side, you could search for a 57-66 Rambler V8 donor car (Ambassador, Classic or Marlin comes to mind) with true RH & LH manifolds and have both sides dump towards the rear.

I believe you have the right idea "it is more trouble then its worth !" You want cheap performance look at a (I hate to say it) Chevy. The 327 was a good motor, but it is only realy worth the trouble for someone doing a restoration. (off load it on a AMC car nut, boat guy or the very rare restoration FSJ guy)

As a 327 owner I would have to agree with the consensus... you would be better off seeking an alternate engine. If it was already in and running then I'd say run it till it blows. But to swap one in, 'naw I wouldn't go that route.

if it is to be dropped in a CJ.... go the 4.0 route, no shortage of parts...and you can drive sideways..... as long as the oil pump is giving juice to the engine

dump that motor on the classifieds section, or offer a trade for a motor you can use.
Trust me, a AMC 327 CJ would be a helluva ride but, in reality. Dollars rule and unless you like pouring Washingtons into the fireplace, get something else. Someone on here would gladly swap you a good v8 for your uses.

why not just find a local shop that could weld up some nice tube ones right there? That way they'd have the motor and could exactly match it up for your truck.
course the rambler one would keep it period-tech, which I know you're sorta shooting for (mine too..except for the addition of the gear reduction starter...which personally I think is the best thing you can do for the truck if you dont want to get stranded someday..)

Same guy that had 4 bl I bought off ebay threw in the rambler exhaust manifolds for 25. I've been working on truck and noticed that 2 of the drivers side exhaust manifold bolts are broken off. Since I've got the steering sector shaft off and need new exhaust system made up, what better time to add to list. I'm going to try the Rambler drivers side exhaust flip so the exhaust dump will be at rear of motor instead of the front.
Flint gave me the idea in another old thread, but hasn't personally done the swap. I'm afraid that the rear exhaust looks like it will dump right at clutch linkage. I dunno until I get old manifold off and Rambler bolted on and see how tight a bend will be required.
The front dump is causing problems with the PTO shaft, old exhaust had to be hammered and still rubbed.
Headers are always a pain even with Stage 8 locking bolts, I've never owned a set on any motor that didn't leak.
4 bl manifold came in yesterday and took to get cermanic coated this morning. :o
