Before shot. Problem areas: fuel lines. (need to cover up, to minimize rubbing from the spare tire)

Stock spare tire winch from a 04 Ford F-150. Comes stock on alot of other newers trucks too I believe. Modifications: straighten mounting tabs.

Drill two holes and mount in the center of spare area. Notice: winch uses a odd size square drive, a little smaller than a 1/2" drive. All I had to fit it was a chisel, with a 12pt socket attached.

Tire does not hang any lower than the shackles and leafs.

Measurements of the spare tire well is 33" by 31.5". My ProComp Xterrain, is a 33 but is actually 31.5"-32". I'll need to wrap the fuel lines or put something so the tire doesn't rub the fuel lines through. Will also need to get better bolts, just grabbed some I had laying around. Also need to get the stock square drive bar to lower/raise the winch or a 1/2" drive extension and grind down the end to fit. Probably took longer to write this up than to actually install it. Whatcha' think?

That's awesome. Great mod, the stock spare mount is like a torture device.
I'm gonna try that one!

I have an'88 GW and useing the stock spare mounting got a 31-10.5-15 into the carrier. I had to use the spare, but will get pics when I put it back. I had to move the carrier down to the bottom hole on the front hanger, took about 2 minutes...

I do like the winch upgrade though, thanks.

That looks GREAT!!! And excellent pics of a familiar area of a Wag is cool to see!
Would a piece of thin wall channel like the two stock ones, that the spare seats up to, serve to hold the fill hoses and give the new 33" spare a place to seat up against?
I moved my stock pin down also and cleaned the threads to let the bolt way out an squeezed a 225 on a 8" wheel in.
Never would have thought to winch from the side. Looks Great.

Thats pretty neat. I've never seen a tire winch like that.

I realize that this was a testing phase, but I do hope you will do more than 2 bolts holding it to sheetmetal? 33" of tire is heavy to just be hanging out back there!
I thought about using a explorer crank winch, and was plannning on adding 2 crossmembers to mount it to that ran across the frame rails.
Looks good though, and a lot heavier than the explorer mount, although the explorer mount had more surface area to mount with.

Fantastic work, Max. Way to make this a reality. I too had given thought to this, as the Ford winch setup is so much easier to work with than the stock bar-and-bolts setup.
The pictures documenting it are excellent. Thanks for sharing this project. I'm sure you've inspired a few folks to do the same. I have something new to look for when I go to the pick-and-pull junkyard: a tire winch.

Cool, another neat mod for me to go try. I think you should pick up some 3/16" x 1" angle stock from the hardware store and bolt it to the frame to support the winch. I made new hanger brackets for the bar to hold up a 31x10.5 on 7" rim under the GW, I needed a longer bolt and a giant wing nut, works, but it's a real pita, this is much better.

What a great modification, complete with pix and instructions. Wouldn't it be cool if you could run a shaft to a cheapo HF ATV winch motor and POWER the tire up and down??? I think you'd run down your battery just SHOWING that to people! <g>

Wow! I bet your weight distribution is the ideal 50-50 now! Does the handling in turns seem neutral? Just a guess...

That is a great idea. I've never seen better pics for documentation. My wag had a spare mount in the cargo area when I got it, screwed into the window trim with a big sheet metal screw that was pulling out. Took that out and replaced the window trim, now the spare is flat in the cargo area taking way too much space. Gotta try that mod. Thanks for the post!

Thanks guys. To answer a few things:

I am not sure I will brace it. It's very stiff sheetmetal. If you know me, I way over build things but I think this is ok. I am going to get bigger washers to distribute the load a little better.

I used the winch instead of the stock bar because, it weighs 65lbs and that is just a huge pain to muscle up into that spot.

I am also going to do something like the stock bar (may even use that) to put into place with some quick disconnects, just as an extra safety precaution so there is no chance it will ever fall out unexpectedly.

I'll update this with any modifications I make..

Ok, I think this is a great modification.
Since you asked for input here goes, I would use a plate on the inside of the Jeep to support the whole thing, I wouldn't rely on the jeeps sheetmetal floor to hold that up, not even with bigger washers. Also, I would make some kind of bracket for the top of the winch so that the part that is up against the sheetmetal is flat and wide, basically it and the upper plate would sandwich the jeep's floor. I am sure on the F150 the winch mounts to a crossmember or something heavier than the bed's sheetmetal. If you look on the donor f150 you will find 2 rods that hook together and have a square drive that fits into the winch socket, it will make cranking it up and down a lot easier.
On a side note, I noticed your rear shocks don't have much for up-travel.
Thanks for the great mod and the pics

Anyone have the original photos from this thread? I'd like to to this mod, but it's hard to envision without the pics.

Thanks!

Sorry, I have them. I took them off my flickr site but I will post them back up tonight if I get a chance. I am actually not quite done yet anyway.

Much appreciated. I remember seeing this a while ago, before I had a need to do it ;)

Fixed the pictures.

Now I just need to make or modify the stock brace, to go underneath it to make sure it stays up.

Thats so cool, I might keep that in mind even though I have an angled spare tire mount. get my bed room back on my J10.

Looks to be a good idea. I have trouble with my 31' tire. I strongly recommend going with your idea of using the original support. I suggest using the winch to lift the tire in place, install the original support and realeasing tension on the cable so the tire is supported by it alone. Contrary to popular belief, Wagoneers are not built like tanks. I have never seen one without fatigue cracks, especially in the cargo area, Dan.

Got a chance to work on it today. Modified the stock brace. Less so than I thought I was going to have to. Just extended the brackets, sort of like a shackle lift. And beat the metal piece, that would normally go into the center cap, down.

Thanks for the update. It looks like it would add the necessary support.

Nice mod! I think I would zip that center piece off the stock carrier brace with a sawzall or something to help keep from buggaring up the wheel.

Very nice to see that someone did this. I was just thinking the other day that it'd be nice to have a crank up/down spare and not have to carry one in the bed of my J10. Have to try that one myself.... Someday!

Good Jerb
and another vote to replace those bolts ASAP :noevil:

That's great! But where is your exhaust?

phatmax95

Dumps out before the tire. You can see it in this picture.

I've never seen a winch like that, but that's awesome! I'll have to consider that when my waggy "grows up".

I see it now. I have a problem mounting a 35X12.50 under the bed of my J10 as the tire gets burned by the exhaust pipe. I've always thought about running 2 into 1 out the side. That may be the fix I am looking for.

Thats pretty sweet. Definitely a great mod.

I was gonna suggest a support, but you already did so. My buddy's chevy had one of those spare tire winches on it and one day he had a flat so he looked up underneath his truck and all he found was a frayed and broken cable, woulda hated to been the guy driving behind him when that thing came loose.

Theres a 33" tire mounted under the bed of my J10 using the stock mount, but due to an oil leak and proximity to the exhaust it caught on fire, so its even more worthless now than it was before. (I have 31s)
