i've been thinking (uh oh http://www.ifsja.org/ubb/wink.gif) and i realized that the np 229 has to be shifted back and forth between 4WD and 2WD before it can be dropped into low range (as opposed to a single lever). why can't we use 2LO on this case? that would be totally killer.
any ideas?

it depends how the linkage is set up on the t-case itself. But, you can cheat sorta, if you have manual locking hubs, and then you just go put it in it 4lo, with the fronnt hubs in free, then you will have 2 low. But if you are talking like a twin stick deal, so you can control the front and rear seperately. I am not sure how the linkage is done on the 229. I know on the spicer 20, it came on some vehicles (scouts) with a OEM twin stick.

If you put manual hubs on your rig, and put that 229 in 4-low, you will very quickly have NO-LOW! http://www.ifsja.org/ubb/mad.gif
You'll fry that viscuous coupler REAL quicklike. There is NO 2-low in a full-time 4-wheel drive system.. sorry.
I blew off the front driveshaft on my 86 when it had the 228 case... I took it off and tried driving it. It drove, but it felt like it was in 4-low. With no front shaft and an open center differential and the shifter still in 4-hi on the floor shifter, it did strange things.. like driving in low range.
You want 2-low? Swap in a 208 and manual hub your front axle. It's an easy swap.

Ahh, your right. A 229 is a full time system only. Forgot about that, my bad :/

Well, it's a full-time/part-time system; its 4Lo range is a true part-time mode, so the driveshafts are locked together and unlocking the front hubs will effectively give you 2Lo. Forgetting to lock the hubs before shifting back into high-range will give quickly give you 0-wheel drive... http://www.ifsja.org/ubb/wink.gif

so if i still had a 228 (previous owner grenaded it) i could go into 4lo, no worries?
hmm... how does one go about installing manual hubs on the front axle? i've heard the waggy front hubs are rather special (not manual, not automatic).
