I went and did all the measurements once apon a time. You will need a 2" body lift to clear the heater box. Otherwise everything is fine.

I have a 460 in my J10. The PO installed it and busted the housing to the heater core and had to cut the drivers side inner fender well for the power steering pump. It is not particulary hard to work on. Plugs and manifold easy to get to. Headers would be custom though I don't know how you would go about finding something off the shelf to fit. If you ever find some let me know!

I have a 460 in a J cab M715. No problem at all with fitting.

I would sell the 401 for top dollar and choose a better engine.

No, no, no...
Remember, last time we sold tickets in advance.
Dang, that was a banner year Kim, we bought new houses.
This year we will take it to OT in the lottery.
I'm putting my money on the Julio Iglesias V9.

I totally agree, Fords do suck. That said, AMC V-8's can provide much more suction in volume thany any of the other big three V-8s can. It is constantly proven everyday when they sling number 7 or 8 or both rods out of the side of the block. Outstanding engineering achievement!

...and that's never happened to a F*rd? It's never happened to any of my AMC's or anyone else I ever wheeled with that ran AMC. Every engine has it's breaking point if it's not maintained.;)

I think I will stay with the 401. and keep the 460 for another project.

I know an ex-AMC drag racer that owns a machine shop up in Stanwood if if you want a good machinist.
IIRC, Jim Green's Performance Ctr in Lynnwood has AMC experience also (I'd ask).

O.K. it fits, what motor mounts are being used? Are they the conversion ones or 80's and newer two stud style? Do the factory Jeep motor perches need to be moved/modified? Does the transmission crossmember work in the current location?

The reason I ask is because I just put a 460 in my F150 and the stroked 351W/C6/BW1345 that was removed is going into my Jeep. With the conversion motor mounts the 460 sits in the factory motor perches (metal things on the F150 frame)......so if conversion motor mounts are used to get the 460 in your rides then my 393W should bolt in also.

Thanks.
