Tonight when I was going up a steep hill in 4-low my jeep started to surge it was even moving the gas pedal on its own. I was trying to maneuver through some trees and it surging was not helping my cause. When I start it or am on level ground it does not surge at all. Any time you are going up hill it goes crazy. any thoughts? I was thinking maybe my float on my carburetor needs adjusted.

Need to tell us what ya got. :D
Were you pressing the gas or just letting it move on it's own?

I had a similar problem when my throttle cable was going bad. I would check there first...

I got a 81 cherokee that has been retrofitted with a 304(sucks). How did you discover it was your throttle cable causing the problem. It does it whether I am giving it gas or if it just idling.

you prolly have broken/worn motor mounts. the engine torquing over excessively is pulling on the throttle cable.
i have experienced this phenomenon as well :)
id check the mounts before you find out the hard way theyre bad by the engine landing on the front axle :eek:

I second Scotty's thought. Check the tranny mounts too (they get a lot of stress if the engine mounts are broken)

Yet like Scotty said, but not so much that the engine will fall on the front axle but the fan going through the radiator like I did under torque.

unclethumbtack;
... When the AMC-Ford MC-1250, MC-4300 and MC-4350 carburetors are in good working order they will run well while climbing at 45 degrees and more. A lot of the after market carburetors do not do as well when climbing.
... You might put a description of your Jeep in your SIG like I have.;)
Have a good one and http://sc.groups.msn.com/tn/BC/C2/JEEPTECH101/1/b.jpg (javascript:tn_click_pic(11, 108, 160)) “Jeep Jeep!” CUL.. Don S..

That's a good point. He should check it before it does this.

I really want to get this fixed ASAP. I live about 45 minutes from disney,OK and about 10 minutes from the D-Day grounds, I do not know anything about carbs and I want to be out there wheeling. I checked my motor mounts they are fine the throttle cable seems to be fine, the only thing I have not checked is my float level. If I cant get it right I might just find a motorcraft carb.

how did you check your mounts? did you do the ole brake torque and have someone watch the engine? mine looked fine and i couldn't pry the engine either way, but when i did the brake trick, i sent the air cleaner into the hood!

Good point. I will try that, but I was wondering if motorcraft carbs off of Ford trucks will work with amc engines I have a plethora....a plethora I tell of you of old ford trucks to pick one off of if this is the case.

You dont think the body or drivetrain could be moveing and hitting the throttle kickdown rod going to your trans do you? Mabye something is hitting it and thats whats pulling on your throttle, that could be a reason that the gas pedal moves by itself.
