Ok, first I will post the old bumper. This was a one off prototype, it had a nice shape, and provided decent clearance, but in the end, it wasnt what I wanted (NOTE: these photos are a few years old):

And now, for the current bumper. This bumper I love, I came up with the basic design, and had Tad build it for me, it provides awesome ground clearance, built in winch mount, and is made from 0.187" wall tube. And, before you ask, Tad doesnt sell these bumpers.

Mine has a good amount of clearance, and a place for my winch:
http://drbob.tqhosting.com/rmb/rmb042306_27.jpg
The rear one could do with more ground-clearance, but it works pretty well as-is:
http://drbob.tqhosting.com/rmb/rmb042306_26.jpg
The bonuses are that there are good strong recovery points, and since they are made entirely from scrap I-beams, they are cheap.
Downside is that they require some body-modifications to work right.
Here is a page with some details about them:

Works great as a work platform also! I can stand on it and wrap one leg around it and lean into the engine compartment. Scares the hell out of folks on the road! They ALL give me room. Nobody parks too close at the mall either.

Here's a link to the pics of our rear bumper. The front is a Ramsey RE8000 in place of the middle section of the factory 3 piece, leaving the outter pieces in place.

Nice work there. At first I thought, "Well now he's gonna have an empty spot where the license plate used to be." Then I realized.
A spare tire rack is a must for me. I can't stand having that thing riding in the back of my wag, taking up all the space.
Does your secret panel door seem to stay pretty secure with those magnets?
Do any of you guys -- Tad -- have some step-by-step pics of your bumper builds?

I just took a look at your site and your rear reciever confuses me :)
How in the world do you tow anything at speed with a trailer hitch like that, or is this an offroad only rig/trailer setup?
fsj1978
09-15-2006, 08:08 AM
We kind of push or exceede the FSJ's tow rating of #7500 so we bought a Pullrite hitch. And yes, there is a drawbar that pivots just behind the rear axle and has rollers that ride on that rail. It effectively lengthens the trailer and moves the "towpoint" to where the pivot is. No sway at all. You *HAVE* to use load levelling bars with that hitch (if you use it the way it was designed, I also built a standard reciever into the middle so it can be used with a regular draw bar/slide/insert) Anyway, it's made so the weight distribution bars in the hitch head (where the hitch ball is) lock out the movement at the hitch ball so that the draw bar essentially becomes another piece of the trailer. Here, try this for a better explaination:
http://www.pullrite.com/pullrite_works.htm
And so far that air hose door has stayed put with no problems.

Brad - yes, he boxed the frame from forward (towards the engine) the cross member and also beefed up the cross member. The horns he he build out front are the same piece of metal he used to box the frame. I think its a 2x6 3/16th.
Here are a couple of different angles from the front. If you are interessed I can shoot some pictures from underneath and how he built up the main support.

Hutti....I LOVE YOUR BUMPER!!! After seeing the green one on the first page and yours, I want to build one just like it. Or, how about you just un bolt that one and send it to me...lol
Is that a 12,000lb winch? I just picked up a used M12000 and your looks identical to it (only mine is not shiney and new looking) Now that I have it working (needed new solenoids) I am verry itchy to get it mounted up.
I would like to see how it ties into the frame and how the winch mount ties into the rest of the bumper.

Those are better but one from the bottom would be great. I am going to buy some tube this weekend and start bending. Thanks.

Noted that the Nate Marsh Wagoneer in the ultimate adventure (4Wheel & Offroad magzine) has a bumper with a similar style. Here is a picture from their website:
