According to the technical link, my 85' Grand Wag (360cid) has the Chrysler 727 transmission. Can anyone tell me how do determine if this is the right one in my rig? I am looking for how to tell the difference b/w the Chry. 727 and the GM TH400. Also, if it IS the 727, does anyone know if the GM TH400 will mount up w/o modification? Are there any benefits to one versus the other?
Does anyone know of a good trans shop in or around Atlanta? I am looking for a total rebuild of my trans w/ a shift kit hopefully for around $350-375.
Next question for this thread: can anyone tell me how I can tell the difference b/w the NP208 and the NP229 Xfer case?
Final question: does anyone out there in FSJ-land have a factory service manual they would like to get rid of?
Thanks for the space!

Ryan, the 727 is the correct x-case for your rig. All AT's in 80-91 FSJ's were either 727's or 999's depending on motors/years. I can recognise a TH400 but not a 727 so I can't help you there. <BLOCKQUOTE>quote:</font><HR>

And no a GM TH400 will not bolt up at all. Jeeps used a Jeep version of the TH400(different case, same guts) prior to 1980. You could bolt up a Jeep TH400 but you'll need a new flex plate and have to add the crank insert/pilot bearing to the crank shaft cause the 727's didn't use one. So far as bolting your stock NP x-case to it I don't know? I doubt it will w/o maybe the tail section from a "GM" TH400 or an adapter? Maybe someone else can jump in here.

Don't know if that price would include a shift kit but if you carry the trans in you can prolly get it rebuilt for maybe around $400. Driving it in where they pull the trans and transfer case plan on doubling that amount.

Easiest way is by the shifter. The 229 runs off vacuum via a switch on the dash for 2WD/4WD and a H/L lever on the floor. The 208 is all mechanical and just has one shifter next to the tunnel in front of the drivers seat with 4L-N-4H-2H on the handle.

1979 was the last year Jeep was equipped with the GM TH400, So you would have the 727 for sure and you can put a TH 400 in but you would need to do one heck of a lot of work, change T-case, front axle, rear axle, ect. ect. the TH400 is a little tougher of a trans but not by a lot and definately not enough to swap it out, there would be no noticeable gain at all. Simplest way to tell if you have a 208 is if you have manual locking hubs its a 208 if not its a 229 :D

Thanks, guys! Sounds like I am a 360/727/229 kinda person.....I am doing some research in the Atlanta area for a decent tranny shop to do a bench rebuild. I will post who / where when I find out, and the results / costs.
