View Full Version : Total Vacuum Advance????

88GW

I have an 88 GW and according to my Haynes manual it says 12 degrees base timing and approximately 35 degrees total advance. To me this would mean a total of 23 degrees worth of mechanical/vacuum advance. Is this correct? I have heard the number being closer to 40 degrees total advance. Also in some repair manuals it has stated 8degrees for base timing on an 88GW. Does someone have TSM with the correct info. The reason for this is I have a massive off idle stumble after replacing the distributor. I found out that the adjustment in the vacuum advance module was turned almost all the way in clockwise. Since then I have turned it out clockwise and this seems to be helping but I need to know the actual specs. I plan on getting some timing tape to adjust it properly. TIA

From my viewpoint this would mean that you want to start with 12 degrees, vith the vacuum advance disabled, get the dist. locked down. Then when you give it full throttle, your timing should advance to 35 degrees total. IN otherwords: 12 degrees with no vacuum on the advance (unhooked) and then when the advance is hooked up, mash the gas and you should jump to 35.

Don't you get more vacuum at lower RPM's? To me this would mean that you are at 35 degrees at idle and 12 degrees at full throttle. Maybe I'm wrong, hope this might help you.
