I am rebuilding my 258 and my chilton doesnt say anything about the cam bearings...yet a kit comes with them. How are these replaced? many people are swapping cams without replacing bearings...is this bad???

Yes this is bad, more so on a high mile engine. You will need to take the block into a rebuilder or some machine shops and have the cam bearings installed. It requires a special tool to do this, as well as it being done correctly. Since you are asking how they are replaced, I advise, take it in and have it done. Your rebuild will last longer. ;)

Definately don't put it back together without the new bearings. If you can, take your block to a machine shop and have them drive them in. If not, the tool is basically a bushing driver with extensions on it. You drive them out front to back, and install them back to front.

If you do them yourself and don't line up the oil hole, you will break your cam.

If you don't get them done, eventually, you will break your cam.

Replace the bearings!!! dont know a whole lot about the 6's but for the AMC V-8's it is the single most important thing for proper oil pressure

It's a must have! If you have never done them before, let the machine shop do it. If you have the block hot tanked they are ruined anyway. If you havn't had the block cleaned, you should while you are at it.
