Emissions and what year did the PS pump brackets change to the newer style as opposed to the older style. I heard that 71 and older had one pump setup and 72 and newer had another. Is this true?

I am looking at a 72 360 now and I may buy it if it doesn't have a bunch of emissions junk to tear off. I just have to make sure my HEI setup will fit it. It is supposed to fit with the "newer style" (72+) ps pump brackets.

Thanks.

emmissions stuff to tear off? if you cant see any, there aren't any. the smog pump was put on in 72 or 73 and the egr 4 barrel came out in 71 or 72, I know the 70 360 in the back yard doesn't have it anyway. 72 is the last year that rocker studs and push rod guides were used. in 73 they used bridged rockers and opened the pushrod holes cast into the heads to allow more movement or something. also, you will have castiron timing gears and not plastic covered aluminum "silent" timing gears, these will still be chain driven though, not just a gear driven timing set.
I can't remember the rest of the differences, but I don't believe they were significant. I've got a torn down 72 360 4bbl in my folks' garage so I know what I'm talking about. as far as brackets, I haven't a clue, but you could always look at that too. as far as I know, and I'm hypothesising here...the brackets SHOULD be the same, but not sure. Anyone else know about this????

Oh, btw: you can put late model heads on a 360 with no probs. every amc v8 head from 71 up to whenever they quit building them should interchange, 304 heads will have smaller valves though. 360 and 401 heads were the same in the smog era too. 401 was in jeeps from 74 to 78.

Just curious... I know the 401 stopped being an option in 78. Is there anything unusual or tricky about swapping a 401 into my 1980 chero for the 360?? Should it slip right in? or are there any differences in the 2 years gone by to consider? Can I rig all the emmisions stuff back up to the 401? (still got to pass them now and again :( .. )

The 360 and 401 are both the same block, the 401 having a larger bore and stroke. Also, 401's only came with a 4 barrel carburetor. It will bolt right back in, but I wouldn't use the 2 barrel manifold and carb jetted for a 360, since it probably wouldn't run well. I'd just use whatever emmissions a late 401 used (EGR and Smog Pump). You should be able to use everything but the intake and carb. If you have smog checks, make sure to keep the catalytic converter in mind when you do any kind of upgrades to the fuel system.

Cool. Thanks!
What do you mean to keep the cat in mind?

Don't take it off or you might have to get a bigger Cat. converter

I know the 70 360 in the back yard doesn't have it anyway.Matt, if that '70 in your back yard is a Jeep it shouldn't be a 360 anyway, if it's a V8 it should be the Buick 350. smile.gif

C.T.,

For us guys that have to pass smog checks, we need to keep in mind that alot of aftermarket non-emmissions legal parts will not "work" with a catalytic converter. They will pass exhaust gases through the unit that are beyond its capability, and the cat will continually give that "rotten egg" smell, and eventually clog or the honeycomb will burn out, making it totally inneffective. I don't know how your smog checks work, but in CT, your exhaust gases are measured (CO, NoX, HC) and without a properly functioning converter, there's no way it will pass. However there's no reason that you can't have a nice-performing semi-modified engine that still passes all the sniffer tests.

Also, Andrew is right in that converters are rated by cubic inches of engine displacement, and the one on your 360 probably isn't rated for a 401. I'd use an aftermarket 3".

I have been positively lusting after a 401 lately. Lots of potential there, methinks; just what the ol' Chief needs!! smile.gif

It's funny you guys should mention Colorado, since the ONE AND ONLY 401-equipped FSJ I've ever seen for sale (in Connecticut) was originally from there. We were all set to buy this '78 Chief W/T complete with the 401, when the SOB decided "not to sell".

401's are rather elusive in the NE. :(

There are two down near my sister's place in Oregon I'm going to check out if I can hurry up and get some time to trek down there. (dibs!) :D

Thanks Jason - I see what you mean. I'd actually been planning to replace the exhaust system past the Y to a hi-flow cat and 2.5in pipes.. Haven't decided on the muffler yet.. like it a bit louder than stock and as rumbley as possible. smile.gif
I'll do that before the 401 at any rate though.
