And funny sidenote, until I opened this thread, I thought this was gonna be about BBQ'ing!

rhino grille all the way, just the look of the tall bars, just mean looking on a big lifted rig like mine will be...(some day) :(
by the way if any one has any info on where i can get my hands on an okay rhino grille please lemme know
I voted for muscle, even though I also have a razor and pignose.
I just like the muscle grille the best... I only wish they werent plastic
It's hard to chose just one! They all look so good!
A lot depends on the vehicle the grill is on as to how good it looks.
Let's see, how does that go again? Eanie, meanie, minie mo....

I voted Cheese Grater, Which I have on both of my jeeps. I don't understand the fascination with the rhino. Since I first got into jeeps I thought they looked silly. Oh well, shows what I know, lol.

I voted for Razor because I think they look best on Cherokees, I like the Rhino and Egg Crate for wagoneers
Razor is definately a must for a Cherokee and J-Truck. Though on the Waggys, I'm split between the pig nose and final type.

One more vote for the Rhino. Everthing else is just a poseur :D
Tonka J200

I voted Rhino too.
I loved watching "Daktari" as a kid (the show that gave the "Rhino Chaser" grill it's name). I played with Tonka FSJ's when they were new (go figure...).
And with the exception of my Final Edition Waggy, every FSJ that I've owned has been a "natural born" Rhino.

I have a broken pig nose on the J10 now. I also have a razor and a rhino in my shop. I like the razor a lot, but with the J10 headed to off road the stronger rhino most likely will go on the truck.

i'm undecided between the pignose and final edition. razors do look realy nice, especially with the 3 piece bumpers.

This whole thing is rigged! I mean who came up with those names anyway? is it a coincidence that the three coolest names have the most votes? Who wants to vote for a pig nose, a cheese grater and an egg crate (even though we all know the really cool jeeps have them;) ).

I always liked the Cheese Grater grille, with the wrap around marker lights and the thick aluminum, they make the front match the rear nicely. I like all the grilles really, except I don't like pignose grilles unless they're painted black, then they look cool.

i like both the razor and rhino grills but if i had to choose id go with the razor it looks good while not looking to arkaic, also would fit with new paint jobs better(i think).

I like all the grilles really, even pig noses. Only problem with the Pignose grille is 99.9% of the chrome ones are chipped and peeling, making them ugly.
And you really don't see too many rigs with cheese grater grilles.

I know Rhinos take a fair beating! I've straightened mine twice and it still looks fair... I wish I knew the eggcrates were at all popular. I gave a sano one to the junkyard. Its not bad looking, it just reminds me of an AMC Hornet! While I'm criticising, it seems like at least half of the muscle and pig noses I come across are broken. Are they weak or is it because they are on the rigs that get wheeled the hardest?

I don't know that the egg crates are really that popular. I just fuss about them a lot trying to draw attention away from Rhinos. :) The muscles and pig noses are vulnerable because they are plastic. A lot of egg crates are busted up too.

That's my chief beef with the later grilles is that they are plastic. Look at 'em cross-eyed on a cold day and they crack or shatter. And any chrome inevitably peels off.
I still say the best-looking grille for an FSJ is the type originally on there. But that's just my taste. I've seen some pretty nice conversions as well--most of them retro.

1. Razor

3. Cheese Grater
4. Rhino Grille
5. Pignose
I don't care for any of the others.

J10Kraler, you got a better picture of your front bumper, I think I like what I see and it may be what I want to do.:)
I must be the oddball and say Muscle. My 83 Chero , or that era, looks to have been the start of the grill type for all other Jeeps since then, other than the Wrangler. I guess kinda like "why change the body style" of our FSJs, " why change the grill look":o

Our 76 Wagoneer, "Old Blue" (retired) has a chrome peeled, busted up Pig Nose on it from the PO. Even has the square headlights and everything. He said that he busted up the original Eggcrate (Boobie) grille in a snowstorm one day.
Our current Wagoneer (Also a 76, called "WOS") has a Razor grille on it.
My personal preference would be: A Razor grille with built in turn signals like the Eggcrate (Boobie) grille. I've had nothing but troubles with my current turn signals below the grille. Always getting poked with tree branches.
By the way, I have a complete Boobie and Razor for sale in the for sale section.

That's funny I was stumbling around the site last night looking for typical grille swaps. I've got a late model '89 that I aquired about 6 weeks ago and a '78 wag that I picked up the same week for parts mostly because it had a running 401 in it. I saw this year old poll and put in a vote for the egg crate not realizing that it would bump the post. lol
Anyway I'm getting excited about swapping the boobies from the '77 to my '89 now that I realize this has been done before. At first I was big fan of the rhino, and then the razor kinda replaced it. But after looking at the mods by shackwrrr http://www.ifsja.org/forums/vb/showthread.php?t=67126&highlight=boobies and Heavy_Metal_Thunder_81: http://www.ifsja.org/forums/vb/showthread.php?t=63731&highlight=boobies, I'll be pretty stoked if mine turns out anything like that!

Here's a vote for the "Final" type. has a nice, clean uncluttered look. Now, if I could just find one that doesn't have the chrome peeling cheap...have a nice (read new) inner section, just need a good outer section. Didn't I read someplace that export versions had a metal outer grill section instead of the plastic?

We make a custom grille to replace the egg crate grille. I like the turn signals where the egg crate has them but I like the sloted Jeep grille look. Thus I designed the grille in the picture to solve the problem. It is made out of steel and then chrome plated. The one in the pic is our prototype and is for sale for $380.00 plus the ride. I'm into it more than that. It has RADJEEPER engraved on it. If you are interested in one of these let me know. We can provide them bare steel or chromed. Still working on exact pricing but perhaps $250.00 bare steel and $400.00 chrome w/o engraving?

no option for custom grille.
One of my projects for when I set up my CNC Router is to cut a sharktooth grille for the fun of it. If it looks reasonably swell I'll throw it on the 'wag and that way when I'm driving I can pretend I'm flying a P-51 or A-10!
...But I think I'd pick muscle just because I like the look.

Voted Rhino, although I like the Razer as well, Rhino just says Jeep more to me being CJ Jeep lover also (even like the Cheese Grater some but don't tell anyone!!) Metal Grilles rule the platic ones IMO. I am stuck with a Final Type on my 86 atm, but would swap it out for any of the metal grilles with round headlights in a heartbeat given the chance :).

I've always like the Razor the most, from a purely aesthetic standpoint. It screams muscle and old-school sensibilities. My plans for my '77 Wag, have always been street-rod oriented and the Razor certainly cuts a badGreat Googley MoogleyGreat Googley MoogleyGreat Googley MoogleyGreat Googley MoogleyGreat Googley Moogley figure. I wanted to add the old, backward script 'Wagoneer' & 'Jeep' Kaiser emblems. But some time ago I came across a photo (promo) of a '78 Wagoneer limited, and I saw my car (with the full wood grain panelling (not really a fan and mine has the thin stainless trim stripe), but I saw this beauty in it's most pristine presentation and realized how nice the Egg Crate grille was off of the factory line. It is, to me, my second favorite, in some ways, now, my favorite. It is, by far more muscular than the other grilles (Razor excluded), but it does scream '70's era (early) muscle, in the same way Mach 1 Mustang does in comparison to its '60's predecessors.
Now, I am not a fan of the nerfs on the 3-piece bumber (also my favorite), and mine doesn't have the nerfs. I plan on tucking the 3-pices bumpers in (about and inch and a half) then welding them into single piece pumpers and having rechromed). About the wood paneling, this photo has made me consider using the thin stainless trim line to wrap around some really dark walnut colored paneling, to go with, what will be, a nice black paint job.
I've also decided to pay homage to AMC in this resto by using the badges that came with this model and swapping the door handles for flush AMC handles. 401 badges and some Willys and Kaiser touches sublty placed about, to link its heritage back to it roots.
I am going for an executive, '70's muscle look. Lots of black, black leather, some dark walnut, chrome/aluminum, etc...
So, anyway, for this vision, the Egg Crate is my favorite grille.
Oh yeah, here's the photo that tipped the scales: (I hope)

I'm leaning on putting a Muscle Grill on my J10. Nothing says Jeep like a Muscle Grill

I really like the muscle with the black insert for the 2drs. That is what I have on my '79 trail beater . I wanted to swap it over to the new '80 that came without a grille, but at some point it was converted to a rhino & the other mounting tabs were removed. I really didn't want to bash up the decent muscle I have, but you use what you have.

Toss up between the Rhino and the Egg Crate. The Rhino was unmistakably Jeep, utilitarian, simple and unique. The Egg Crate, likewise was an AMC hallmark all the way. It mimicked the AMC 1970 era passenger cars, if your into that sort of thing.
I voted Rhino but I like the Egg Crate and then Razor next. My M715 came with a Razor grill on it but I'm not sure if I want to keep it. The brush guard I have doesn't want to fit with the grill in place.

I like the rhino grille the best. Once i get one my brother and I will have a good aesthetic theme. his BMW 2002tii has a very similar looking grill and headlight pattern as the rhino grille with the round lights and vent holes. i like the idea of our ironically matching cars made because the rest of them would be so completely different

86j10, I've got a good center section from a muscle grill that you can have for whatever it costs to ship it. This was on my truck when I bought it and the aluminum was all crunched up. the center section is gray rubber or plastic or something. I was surprised that it wasn't metal. But anyway, I have it if you want it. They you can have one to paint and still keep your shiny chrome one.

I didn't read all this thread, so hope it wasn't already mentioned.

Even though I have a cheese grater and is is very good looking, I have to vote the Rhino best. The original Kayser Jeeps had such great clean styling. Before the cheap plastic, fake woodgrain, and excessive chrome. They had a certain graceful ruggedness. I am persuing a cereer in automotive styling and I have to say the Rhino grille Gladiators are exceptionally good looking. One of the best exterior designs for a truck.

The rust on my Rhino grill and bezels were beyond reasonable repair and i tired of my Final Edition Grill "again" so I went a new route, heres the transformation of my jeep over the last year with grills

I've decided I Need more FSJ's to allow me to see all the grills at once.

Razor grills are sweet because they can be obtained at a good price, are well built and can be cleaned up to nearly mint condition even after years of exposure. well built? hmmmm.....maybe youve seen some that I havent. Compared to the Rhino they are downright fragile and easily dented and bent.

I keep changing my mind. I voted razor. Then I liked rhino, then boobie on jtrucks, then cheesegraters with wrap-arounds (ahem... Dr. Marneaus), then muscles on lifted waggies. I can't decide... guess it depends on the fsj build

muscles on lifted waggies.
This I agree with.
I cant vote on this because I like too many of them, dont really have a fav as they all look good in some way or another.

I think the razor looks nice, but the Rino makes an "old school cool" statement. I voted Rino.

I voted muscle, but i love the look of a good cheesegrater grille. I think a muscle looks better than a cheesegrater would on my cherokee though.

My muscle grille and driver side bezel is broken and I have not been able to find any replacements. Would a cheese grater work on my 1981 Cherokee?

Rhino with a brow, Muscle without.
To answer your question ^
yes, most of them are easy swaps.

If you mean a full grill swap...technically yes.
But here are your problems:
1) the grill mounting brackets spot welded across the bottom of the face panel for the grill to screw to will be different and likely get in the way.
2) your headlight bucket will be different since it is built for a wider rectangular bulb. the older pre 1979 round headlights had round headlight holes and different bucket mounting screw-holes.
3) the egg-crate has turn signal block-off "plates" to cover the lower turn signal holes. you can cut these or wire in the egg-crate "boobie" turn signals.
If you mean just replacing the the center plastic piece...I don't know. I've never tried it and do not have any grills NEWER than 1978 anymore. I originally had "older"...ALL of my grills are 1978 and OLDER. Sorry.

Pignose, just cuz that's what I have, and what I've grown up around  A pignose on a waggy or pickup/cherokee is ok but I still think a 1980 black pignose from a chero/pickup looks the best of all grills!!!

RHINO. Its a classic piece of design work...I am not sure who had it first but there is no doubt that design is still used today on a high class automobile...http://i1076.photobucket.com/albums/w451/Wagoneer1965/Screenshot2012-06-29at32936PM.png

The razor has grown on me since I bought my latest Cherokee. But the rhino remains my favorite. It isn't so much the design of the grille, which is rather bland honestly, it's how the whole front end looks. The lights, the pie pans, the flat panels holding everything. It just has a look like nothing else ever.
I like the angle version of the rhino which CommanderChaos is building even better.

HAH! say that near a guy who takes pride in his RR and he'll probably have you flogged for demeaning his high-class motor-coach by comparing it with crude Yankee-built Junk.

I know alot of people...and most of them can be jerks at times, including me. Some are rich, but most are poor to middle-class. Alot of these punks are driving Diesels a few years old, chipped and/or with stupid looking dual stacks popping up behind the cab (dual 6" stacks on a strait 6...brilliant!) and they love nothing more than spewing out massive clouds of thick, black smoke at every gear change and intersection. That qualifies as being a jerk in my book.

What is the history of the names? Muscle? Pig? Rhino?

Good question. I think its what some dork decided to call them.
The Rhino is short for "Rhino-Chaser" Grill. its the smaller central one like shown in my Avatar. "Razor" cuz it looks like an electric razor...I guess. "Boobie" because the in-grill turn signal/running lights are shaped like breasts with nipples. The rest...beats me....
I don't remember seeing the pics at the beginning of this thread before a couple weeks ago...maybe I just missed it.
