View Full Version : Tire clearance with Hi-Steer arms.

I gust grabbed some OTT Hi-Steer arms and plunked them on my SOA setup and found out that the passenger side arm contacts the tire. I have 35x12.5x15 MTR's (old Hummer tread style) on 8" rims with 3 5/8" BS. I will be swapping the rims and tires out at some time but I was wondering if I should change my rim BS to accomidate this issue so there will be no further tire issues.
What kind of tire and rim combos are run with SOA setups and Hi-Steer arms?

I've got 17" wide Ground Hawgs on 14" wide rims w/2.5" BS that clear the early series Parts Mike arms on my D60.
Pushing your backspacing out will increase bump steer and death wobble tendencies.
The best solution is to go with a bigger diameter wheel (with corresponding tire change) to clear the arm and sell the wheel/tire combo you have now. I'd go straight to 17" wheels. It's slightly easier to find tires for 17" wheels these days than for 16".

Ok guys, I love this forum and I'm getting ready to hopefully do an SOA but the more I read the more I'm leaning towards a 6in. Rustys kit. I just got pumped about the SOA when I read the thread about the guy that used all junkyard parts and spent less than 400. on parts.

Yeah, but he also has a stock D44 front. That's one of the reasons why he spent less than $400.

 And it's crossover not high steer. That stuff is in the way for wheelin' around here.
I have 37s and 15X8 chrome steel wheels with 3.5" of BS, high steer w/PMP arms and 1" spacers. No problems.
I should point out that I also have about the same $2500 (in my whole rig) investment as the $400 SOA cat.

I run 35/12.50s MTRs on Rock Crawler 15x8 with 2.5 inch back spacing...no rubbing what so ever
I am running the harshterrain stuff that is offsett a bit to accomodate the tire size. I am also running a 1" spacer.
As far as bump steer...I don't have any, but the geometry is just about perfect (i.e. drag link and tie rod are almost parallel)
