i just did a small overhaul of the carb and did not find what i thought i would. i thought the fuel bowl would be empty after sitting overnight but it was full. i just put in a new float/ needle and seat/ damper spring, replaced dirty 56 jets with 55's and a new power valve. the accelerator pump was fine as well. the carn was a holley rebuilt with 5000 miles on it when i got it. the choke opens normally

my problem is in the morning i have to pump the gas a turn her over constantly to get her to start. and most other times when she sits this is a problem. my timing is at 10btdc and the other rpm settings are correct. what might you think is the problem? if you need anymore info let me know

what should the choke be doing at startup? i looked at it a long time ago to see when it opens as it warms up and it did that correctly. it does not stay closed at start up, should it? thanks

Yep, that is the problem then...the solution? Uhhh...looks like you have the 2150 carb? I know nothing of them...you might want to start a new thread that is titled something like:
"how to adjust/repair the choke on a 2150"
Then, just throw alink to this thread in that thread...that way, you may get a 2150 expert to chime in for you.
AFAIK, the choke is supposed to snap shut mechanically (when adjusted right) when you tap the throttle prior to a cold startup. Then as it warms up, the electric part opens it...but that may be backwards
Anyway, you need to find out why you can't get it to close. If it isn't closing, you are going to have a hard time getting her running all winter long.
Sorry I can't be of more help :(

Any and every choke should never close all the way. It should be cracked open just enough to allow air in upon start up. It should open slowly as the engine warms up. Unfortunately most of my tweaking experience is with 2 and 4 barrel Rochesters. So I guess I'm not much help on that model. The principles are the same though. Plus theres nothing like an American V-8 in cold weather.... Winters here, Let the bad running posts begin...

benjaminOn a "cold" motor set the choke adjustment a little toward the rich side. You won't see the choke plate move. Then go inside and floor the pedal fully once before starting, that sets the choke(closes it). That's how it works if your linkage is correct anyway. If flooring the pedal on a cold choke doesn't close the choke plate you've got the linkage messed up. Once running blipping the pedal should release/open the choke plate back up.
Once you get it running you can decide if you have to set it even more/less again but you'll need to wait till the motor and the choke spring are cold again. Key word here for choke adjustments is "cold" motor and choke spring.
