View Full Version : '85 360 => '89 Wag? need to know ASAP
I think I already know the answer to this, but will I run into any problems putting an '85 engine into an '89 Grand Wagoneer? The '89 had a funky starter with the solenoid on it, GM style, which made me ponder. Also, the '89 will have a 727 too, right?

If it had the 360 it should have the 727. I don't think anything changed from '85 to '89, not sure though. If you have to take the sending units for the '89 and put them on the '85. Just get new ones for an '89 if you have to. As for the starter, hmmm... See if the one off of the '89 will work on the '85 motor, if it will use that one. Otherwise use the '85 one.
Someone else should be able to give better details on the starter...

the starter on the 89 should be a Mitsubishi style, smaller. I don't believe the 85 will fit in the receiver hole., but there's no reason that the 89 starter wouldn't work on it. The flex plate's the same motor to motor.

You can do it. However you will need to use the starter from the 85 and wire the ford style selinoid to the relay on the firewall (EASY). The 89 starter will not work on the 85 motor, it will bolt up and look real good but will miss the ring gear and not turn the motor over, starter will free spin. Other than that it is a normal swap. Both the 89 and the 85 would be mated to the 727 as Cecil14 has stated ;)
Whew! Thanks Crazy_Jeepman. So the '85 starter WILL bolt to the '89 TF727? That's what it sounds like, and honestly that's what I wanted to hear. I'd actually prefer to use the Ford style solenoid anyway. Confirmation of the above, plus one last question: will there be any problems with the shifter linkage? I'm still fairly new to auto-trannys.

Shifter linkages will be no problem other than adjusting them properly. I have done this swap in my 89 rebuilt 78 360 in it so if you need to know how to wire the starter let me know when the time comes. Like I say though it is real easy. Use the original power steering pump from your 89 as the power steering hoses are diferent, otherwise you will have to change the fittings on the 85 Powersteering pump. You should be good to go. :D
