I ordered a spool for the amc 20 from my 80 Wag that is to be installed in me YJ. The guy at 4wheelparts told me their parts vendor doesn't offer a spool due to the two piece shafts. I ordered one from discountjeepparts made by Yukon. Anyone know if this will work, or do I now have to order the one piece shaft mod to make it work?
On another note, I noticed the 4wheelparts website says they will beat other prices, so I took my parts list in there today and asked if I could order my parts from them and have them install my gears. They gave me a good fair price for the gears and everything for doing the D44 and AMC20. I'm taking them in as soon as I get this 80 Wag hauled off to the scrapper. I'm ordering the spool and taking it to them because they don't sell Yukon parts and that's the only full steel spool I found for a 20 axle.

all 80 thru 85 fsj amc20s use one piece axles. the two piece axles only came on the cj series.

All M20 and M23 rear ends use the same carrier, ring, and pinion. The M23 in our rigs use a different housing and different shafts (same 29 spline shafts however).

thanks guys. hopefully I'm safe with the part i ordered. it was tough finding a full spool listed for the AMC20 rear. the guy I dealt with at 4wheel parts in Fort Worth today was the assist manager and I asked him about the prices and labor and told him I didn't want to affend him, but the website does say they will beat prices and I wanted to order everything from them. When I placed the order he thought I said I had the spool already, so when I called later to ask why it wasn't on the invoice he started looking for one. He said they couldn't find one. I told him I knew where I could get one and if it didn't bother him I'd just order it and bring it with me later. He was very nice to deal with. Lots of people get upset when you mention internet prices and try to deal with them. I wanted them to install my gears, so I wanted to keep them happy. It's kinda like keeping the waitress happy so they don't spit on your burger. ;-)

I have a Strange AMC 20 spool. My brother has a 31 spline AMC 20 spool I believe it is made by Currie Enterprises, my Strange is standard 29 spline

Right. But, not all 86 FSJs had the AMC20. That was the change over year when they went back to the D44.

Yup, AMC tended to use up old stock before they began using the "changed" parts. You'll see a lot of 79's with the older style door latches/doors, like my J-10, and the later 86's with D44 rears.

When I had my ARB installed in my AMC20, along with new bearing, gears, and other stuff, they called and asked me what 'aftermarket' shafts I had so they could get the right bearings. I had to explain to them more than once that the Waggy's came with one piece shaft and yes, they are really stock.

I inquired about 6 years ago at a now defunct 4x4 shop about getting a spool for my 20/23. They laughed at me and said "why would you want a spool for something with 2-piece axles." I informed him of his error but he refused to believe me.
Question: Why do most of us continue to refer to them as AMC 20's rather than 23's??

I always thought it was a 20?

Corperate 20 is the common name for em, and if you said AMC 23 rear axle, you'd see the eyes of the counter geek start to glaze over.
