Anyone know what makes these two carbs different? I want to upgrade to a performance intake and 4bl carb and this looks to be a good deal. I need the emmisions junk and elect choke.

#1400 is the street legal smog model Chevy mainly.

#1405 is manual choke minus most smog stuff

#1406 is electric choke minus most smog stuff

#1407 is manual choke 750 cfm

#1406 is probably your best choice. Summit and Jeg's carry them at reasonable cost. Check Edelbrock's site for more info.

You could but I think the #1400 has more emissions stuff. I think most FSJ users are using the 1406 and getting thru emissions with them.

not sure about virginia, but in california if your truck didnt come with an option for 4v carb, putting one on is an automatic failure. And since 78 was the last year for that, you may want to double check your smog laws there.

i think youll be ok, i put a 1406 on my 89, it looks stock enough to get by, i dont have to pass a sniffer test.

Fortunately Virginia is a commonwealth... not a comunist satilite... I checked with my local mechanic... their shop guys all build hot rods and he told me they only do a visual to make sure all the smog junk is connected... they don't really care if it works or not. Maybe Arnold can get you guys straightned out out there. I think they spent WAY too much of your hard earned tax money sitting around coming up with this kind of stuff...
I really just want a simple upgrade. Something that goes right in, does a better job and isn't even more compicated! smile.gif

The Edelbrock 1406 and 1400 are identicle except for the cannister purge port on the upper body of the 1400. They both have vacuum ports for EGR; however, the EGR connection for a stock AMC V8 is directly to the intake manifold, so this feature is immaterial to FSJ owners because it was meant to be compatible with Chevy applications.

The 1400 gives you a place to run a vacuum line from your charcoal cannister -- that's the only difference. The Carter AFB-9635 is exactly the same carburetor, except that Carter installs spring-loaded needle & seat assemblies, whereas Edelbrock makes these an option to be purchased separately as "off-road" needle/seats.

Technically, neither one is smog legal on any V8-equipped FSJ after 1978, because no 4-bbl carburetor was available as an option after 1978.

If your local smog Nazis overlook that little tidbit, you're okay from there.

In rigs I've owned previously, I installed a Carter carb on either an Edelbrock or Holley manifold, with Edelbrock headers and MSD ignition, and had everything including the smog pump hooked up and operating properly. I painted the air cleaner to look like new, and put on an OEM decal "360 4-barrel" bought from am AMC parts dealer.

So a smog Nazi might've been fooled, although I never had to deal with one. The person to whom I sold my J10 lives in Cincinnati, where they do e-check but aren't too pick with the visual inspection. He passed the e-check just fine.
